US forces capture Saddam Hussien
Show Notes Transcript Chapter Markers

It almost took until the end of the year for what was possibly one of the biggest news stories of 2003 to break but Saddam Hussein is found hiding in a spider hole in Tikrit and captured by US forces. At the same time there's terrosim in Moscow when Red Square is bombed in a Chechan suicide attack.

In popular culture, and almost as horrific, Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson provide colour commentary for the American Billboard Music awards, thankfully we're saved by Kelis, whose Milkshake still brings all the boys to the yard.

At the movies Tom Cruise has a crack at taking on The Last Samurai, Russell Crowe becomes Master and Commander and a live action remake of Peter Pan creeps everyone out.

Plus we wish a happy birthday to the most famous woman in the world right now!

Week of seven December 2003.

Welcome once again to the podcast where we rewind to this week in history 20 years ago. It's called t -. 20. You know the drill by now with your host Joe and Mel home. Mel. Hello it. I'm good. It's also the podcast where we have a we rest assured in the comfort that we know things that our children.

Hey, how you doing?

Would never understand things like the phrase wind the window down. Things like get off the Internet so that I can use the phone.

We're about to hang up the phone. Who even hangs up the phone these days?

I've got hangups. None of them have anything to do with the phone. Maybe some of them do. What about? I need a pen. That cassette player chewed my tape again, which actually triggers me a bit because of what Michael said. About our ages ago.

The logo. Yeah, I'm gonna try and fix that for next year. Just wait. Just wait. New year. new US, New Year, new logo.

Yeah, it's OK. It's OK. Good. Excellent, great.

Quick, hurry. It's back on TV. Remember that one. But I go to the toilet and.

The ad breaks over. Yeah. Ohh my gosh.

The ad broke. Yes, please.

Burnt you CD from Limewire, yeah.

Romantic. I've printed out this whole film and there's only. Two good photos story of my life that's.

A that was a bane of our existence.

So many pocket photos, so many thumb photos.

Printing is fun, so disposable these days. One thing that I don't wanna have to explain to my child just yet is this song.

My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard and they're like, it's better than yours. Damn right, it's better than yours. I could teach you, but I have.

Why is she teaching me? What's the milkshake? Why are all the boys coming to the yard? And why is she charging for it?

Or are they lost? I cannot believe. That song is 20. Years old. Oh my gosh.

I know makes me feel pretty. I'll quick wind the window down. It's getting. Hot in here?

Let's rewind that one on the cassette.

December the 13. 9th at around 8:30 PM Baghdad time, United States military forces captured Saddam Hussein alive.

Big news this week in the War on Terror, a major major moment in history. The photograph of Hussein was splattered all over the media that week. Yeah, he did. He was a little bit unkempt. Yes, he was a little bit unkempt, you know. Thank goodness the film turned out.

I remember that one front page on the newspapers.

He had a.

Big Beard, didn't he? Because? Hadn't had a shave. For a while, Ruggish.

For that photo, because it was everywhere. And then there's this.

Thank you.

Well, as well as presenting the first award, Jessica and I are here for a billboard first. We're gonna be appearing throughout the night as the shows colour commentators kind of like on, you know, Monday Night Football.

And Nick, this is a live show, so don't say anything ditzy or stupid.

Well, that just makes me cringe.

So much colour.

Jess Simpson and Nick Lachey hosting the Billboards awards.

Stay out of it, Nick, listen.

The billboards awards. Geez, I sound like an old person now it's.

From the bill, it's on the Billboard.

Just the Music Awards.

Quick, the ads are finishing get back.

Those stories and more tonight on t -, 20. But before we get to those stories and more, it's the Hatch match and dispatch clue this week. This is for the segment that we do at the end of the show. If you're just joining us for the first time and welcome. OK. So I didn't tell you earlier on we are. We are so glad you're here, that I don't want to sound desperate, but we're really glad with you.

We're glad you're here. We're desperate.

This is a birthday hatches matches and dispatches. Is our births, deaths and marriages segment we do at the end of the show and this is a birthday of a famous celebrity that said this.

Part of growing up and moving. Into new chapters of your life. Is about catch and release. What I mean by that? Is knowing what things to keep. And what things to release? You can't carry all things, all grudges, all updates on your ex decide. What is yours to hold? And let the rest go.

Umm. We'll find out. Who said that? If you think you know, stick around for the affirmation at the end of the show, we'll talk about that in the Hatch as much as the dispatcher segment.

Oh God, it was so nice. Feel good about yourself?

But first, we're gonna do the news.

We'll start with the 9th of December 2003. We had a blast in the centre of Moscow, killing six people and wounding several. More known as the Red Square bombing. It was a female suicide bomber who set off an explosive belt in an underpass near the entrance to the Kremlin and Red Square, which two iconic landmarks in Moscow also happened around rush hour. So there were a lot of people. Around at that time, unfortunately ending up killing people. Wounding more and a lot. Of significant damage as well.

The Kremlin and Red Square very secure areas in Russia as well. But I remember during the Cold War that the the talk like American film crews could never get in there. It was always locked down. They couldn't do any news reports from there and stuff like that. And I think even Hollywood, when they're filming movies, couldn't go and film in Red Square, although I.

Yeah, that's right.

Leave. I might be wrong, but the Schwarzenegger Belushi film Red Heat was one where I think. They were actually. Allowed for the first time in a very long time to go into Reds grand film that's neither here nor there this well, it is in the context of the fact that it is a very secure area and I'm very surprised that this kind of happened. So the target obviously. Of the bomber was the Russian parliament. It was reported that it was a car bomb initially, but they later figured out it was actually somebody walking who asked a passerby how to get to the lower House of parliament. So, like, can you give me directions? And then the bomb went off by accident before they got there. And I I say thankfully. I mean, if they had have gotten into the Parliament, that would have caused major drama. It was just outside the National Hotel, which is right across from Red Square.

The responsibility for the attack was claimed. By a Chechen separatist group.

It's a bit monkey. See Monkey do with terrorism at this stage, I think like the Chechens had legit beef with Russia. But I mean, we're not gonna really get into that here. It was just a. It was a pretty, I mean regardless of. Whatever side that you fall on, it's not a tactic that you should be employing to get your point.

And I think it. Was common for female suicide bombers because often it was their husbands that had been fighting in the war and were killed, and it was like a retaliation. So they recruited the wives.

Yeah. So they're very easily radicalised. Yes, yes. Now Speaking of radicalised, we moved to the 13th of December with the big news story this week, former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein is captured near his hometown of Tikrit during Operation Red Dawn by U.S. forces.

December the 13th. At around 8:30 PM Baghdad time, United States military forces captured Saddam Hussein alive. He was found near a farmhouse outside the city of Tikrit in a swift raid conducted without casualties. And now the former dictator of Iraq will face the justice he denied to millions.

He was so excited, you could tell George was just elated.

Yeah, because I can't. I can't sound.

That that had happened.

Too happy about this.

Jay Flight is pretty cool.

I gotta gotta put. On my serious voice, but inside, I'm just.

It it was a big. Deal at the time because the enthusiasm towards the war in Iraq was waning at a rapid pace. And this was a big win. I mean, we talked about the Thanksgiving stuff a couple of weeks ago and and how that had given everyone a little. Bit of a. Lift and yes, that's right. They had caught Uday and Qusay and now a few weeks after he's come back from Thanksgiving, they've caught Saddam Hussein. And I I remember I remember where I was at the time.

They had already captured the Suns as well.

Was in the in the kitchen at work, getting ready to do the shift and and the press. Conference came over and I. Like, Oh my God, they got him.

They did it because you starting to think cause. Well, they didn't capture. The songs, the songs were dead, weren't they? Because there was a lot of back and forth. Yeah.

Those are shootouts they'll kill.

That's right. And you, you started to think. Ohh, they're never going to get Saddam.

Yeah, yeah.

Untouchable. They're not gonna find him. So it was quite I. I was quite surprised by it. He was. He was labelled as high value target. #1 HVC one.

The ace of Spades, the ace of spades.

And he disappeared from public view soon after the invasion started between July and December, the task Force 121 carried out 12 unsuccessful raids to find him. Together with 600 other operations against targets including 300 interrogations, they interrogated 300 people to try and find him.

That's a lot of work. It's that would have been exhausting, painstaking, and at this stage, Iraq is pretty occupied by U.S. forces. So, you know, he's obviously operating through. A A very I I don't know. I I don't think that there was a very well equipped underground network that was protecting him. Judging by the way he was found. So.

Yeah, they had a bit of a breakthrough on the 1st of December, a former driver gave them the name Mohammed Ibrahim Omar al Muslim, who was Saddam's comrade, known as the sauce or the Fat Man. So over the next two weeks. Nearly forty members of his family were interrogated to try and find his location 12th of December they raided a house in Baghdad that was being used as an insurgent headquarters, and they capture him. They capture the sauce, the fat man and early the next morning he dogs in where? Ohh me, it's good that.

They captured the fat man. Just in time for Christmas.

He revealed where Saddam could potentially be found.

Yes, so well that intelligent and other intelligence from detained former members of the bar party supported by signals intelligence from the ISA, finally pinpointed Hussein to be in this remote compound in the South of Tikrit. And let me tell you, it was not the opulent kind of lifestyle that Saddam was used to living to. They basically found him hiding in a hole. He's in this little underground hideout known as a spy. The whole very narrow little compartment, obviously. Like he wasn't there all the time. He was pottering around this little house, but the the spider hole was obviously built into part of the house, so whenever there was a raid, they'd go and hide in there small entrance, camouflaged by bricks and dirt and it was not large enough for him to even stand upright in. So it was kind of like one of those. Really awkward moments in hide and seek. Where you cause you it's it's it's one way in and one way out. So it's not like you could run.

You've got the best hiding. Spot and I'm never going to find you.

Yeah. It's like, yeah. But like, there's only one way in and out. So you kind of bug it anyway. Donald Rumsfeld was overjoyed.

Ohh got me.

You know you have a very unusual situation. You have a person who was one of the most brutal dictators in in, in the adult lifetime of anyone in this room who tortured people who killed people, hundreds of thousands of people. He killed and intimidated the entire nation and the neighbours. And the the IT is enormously important that people see that he is out of Commission. That he is what he is. He was a fugitive living in a dirt hole. And controlling that country no more for.

Yeah, no returns tap backs, they there was. A bit of a shootout, but.

Yeah, I think he had. A Glock on him, but they managed to apprehend him without.

Any serious injuries?

He I tell you what is. He sitting in the. The spider hole trying to fire off that Glock. He's probably deaf as. A post. They pulled him out of there, but I like I. I I think something to the effect of perhaps his weapon malfunctioning or him running out of ammunition like it was. All very embarrassing for Saddam. So they found, I think, the Glock which he was using in the gunfight, there was an AK47, about 750 grand in US currency recovered from the spider hole and two other individuals were who were in the house were also detained as well. I reckon the other. Individuals would have seen like the US Army roll up and just go. Ohh he's he's in.

Over there, over there, over there in.

The spider hole. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Please don't shoot me. He's in the spider hole.

That in that hole. Watch that. They, and it was, it was such a big moment as part of the war that they really wanted to also prove that it was him. They wanted to have no doubt that that was Saddam. They'd captured him. So they did biometric testing and they used dental records because they wanted to verify his authenticity and say. And Yep, we've definitely got him. They released images and video footage shortly after the capture. And then released footage of him undergoing a medical examination after his capture.

I saw that though like. Checking his ears and his hair and. His teeth and all that. Sort of.

Yes. Yeah, it odd.

Stuff. It was quite it was almost dehumanising because he was just treated like, I don't know, like yeah, it was just. It was weird to see him in that context because obviously he was unshaven, he looked very. Tempt and dirty and he used to seeing him in the military uniforms and looking in the propaganda post, even the even the statues and stuff. And he just looked like a caring old man.

So powerful. In the in in the visuals, yeah. Withered old guy that just climbed out of a. Spider Hole covered in dirt.

Yeah, yeah, it was pretty big. It was. A pretty big moment.

It was and it it. Was a significant symbolic moment, and it was widely covered by the media and it was hoped that it would. Stop the insurgency in Iraq and help to stabilise the country. I don't think that it immediately brought an end to the violence and and instability, but.

No, no. And there was still this looming question of. So where's all the weapons of mass destruction like?

Where's the well? We found an AK47 in the clock.

Yeah. And $750,000 in cash. I mean, money is the root of all evil, but I don't think that's the thing, so.

Does that count?

He eventually goes on. Trial by the Tribunal for Crimes against Humanity, he gets executed. Forward Fast forward to 30th of December 2006, was when they hung in. I don't know that it was televised, but I definitely saw the footage of him being hung. Yeah, so that they filmed it and they, I don't know if they broadcast it or they released the footage to the media. It was definitely available on the Internet.

What's that?

That televised I. Feel like that? I remember seeing it soon. Yeah, I can't remember.

Because I remember watching it out of morbid curiosity, and it was quite surreal to see to see that happen. And very primal too. I don't. I don't know why I felt so compelled to see it, but I it's a it's a big moment in history. Like it's a massive dictator that, you know for the last however many years the world have been rallying against. And, you know, this war had been fought and it was kind of a a closure moment and stuff. It wasn't nice to watch. It is interesting to look back and just go wow, like, that's. That's one of those big moments in history that happened in our life. Time like and then it makes you feel really old, you know, like wind the window down because I need a bit of air cause I'm starting to get a little bit overwhelmed. I'm feeling a little bit old. You know, it used to be the stuff that I read about in books at school and now it turns out that I've.

Yeah, it's it's getting hot in here.

Lived through part of it and I'm old, yeah.

It's my life.

Let's go over to music and hopefully lighten the mood and make me. You young again.

OK, sure. Speaking of Young, Will Young still number one in the UK with that single, something about leaving, wasn't it? I think I need to leave. I don't need to be here something I'm going.

Ohh good. Yeah, I think I think I need to leave to leave.

The Angels brought me here, guys. Sebastian still number one in Australia, but it's been spell checked to angles. Brought me here. Ohh.

Oh, is that the time? Yes. Ohh, that old chestnut.

Damn protractor and set set square sent me.

Well done. Artificial intelligent, yeah.

The wrong way, gosh.

Still a little way off from Skynet, aren't we?

I saw sillies let me down again. Let's have.

OK.

A listen to the top five in the. US a little. Bit different this week.

Come on.

I think about you. My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard and they're like, it's better than yours. Damn right, it's better than yours. I could teach you, but I have to charge mine.

We're now. More y'all. Don't hear me. You just wanna dance.

When you move, when you move.

Eat your *****.

Ohh, feel like I'm back at Sugar Reef.

What is ray?

Sugar Reef was like this R&B club that so upstairs, you know where you get. The tacos now. In greener place, Sugar Reef was a club above. There was above. There's like a staircase. You go above there and they used to play R&B and hip hop back in the early days. Well, you know what it became. And I didn't realise I was going upstairs.

The Beets burrito company. Do you know? It was a pool hall before that.

Listen to my R&B one night at Sugar Reef walking up the stairs and on one step it's like. Entertainment is of an adult nature, I. Was like, yeah. Well, they play. Rap songs is a bit of swearing, so keep walking up the stairs and it says 18 plus and like Ohh it's you know it's a.

No, no.

Nightclub they serve alcohol and sure, whatever. And I walk in and in a matter. Of a week it had turned into. An adult club, no, yes. But I was. I walked in and I. Was so embarrassed that I didn't. Realise so I just sat down for a bit. I thought I'm just gonna pretend I'm. Meant to be. Here and then I. Was like, well, how do I leave now without anyone noticing? It was very awkward. It's very disappointed.

Gee whiz, it's and it's upstairs for you. Wouldn't wanna confuse it with the beach burrito and go upstairs and order a Taco. You know what? You gonna get a furry?

Taco that just it was very yes, very.

Wow, that is discombobulating.

Discombobulated, it was not. I was going upstairs to hear Candy rain my Soul For Real. And there was a pole and a few other things going on.

Outstanding. So the charts remind you of Sugar Reef, which then became an adult love. And ladies and gentlemen.

Sugar Ray Sugar Ray. That was such a good club, Sugar Ray.

Kelis and her milkshakes have entered the chat.

They have from her third studio album. Nasty. The single was written and produced by The Neptunes. Really. For real? Who's the other guy? Pharrell. What's the other guy's name? Ohh.

Pharrell and Co. I don't know. The the other Neptune guy.

That, yeah, that guy.

Yeah. Wow, that's.

This that's Chad, Chad, Chad, Hugo. Chad. Hugo. Thank you.

You'd be so insulted if he listens. Chad Hugo. Yes, that guy? Yep.

The song was. Originally offered to Britney Spears. For her album in the Zone. Milkshakes. Yeah. And I don't know if she said no, thank you. Or if they then went? No, we're gonna give it to chalice instead. I don't know how it went from Brittany to college. I don't know if Brittany turned it down and then they offered it to college. Or they went no, Brittany, we don't want you to have it. We're gonna give it to her. I don't. Know I don't know what we're done, but originally also just.

Maybe it just wasn't a good. I don't. Think it's a good fit for Britney?

No, I don't think so. Either I don't think it would have been as huge. And she had she had the song with.

Madonna at this stage. So she.

It was a good fit for Callis. Let me tell you.

Pigs in number. Three in the US nominated for a Grammy. It was massive. It was on so many compilation albums and. It's just become this. Ongoing meme as well of my insert whatever brings all the boys to the yard and people still. People still talk about it.

Yes, like my pulled pork brings all the. Boys to the yard.

Your pulled pork brings everyone to the. Yard. It was amazing. Thank you.

It smells. It smells pretty good, yeah.

Yes. Now my microphone smells like pulled pork.

Well, let's stop belching on it and you should. Be fine. There was even a Yiddish.

Version. Remember the show hunters?

Yes, with our Pacino and his brother cap. Kept China anyway.

I love that.

Very good. Very. Ohh, no you can't. Can't.

In the original. Yiddish, Yiddish milkshakes. Pretty decent.

And there were some controversy last year when Beyoncé released her single. G and didn't. Credit, I think. They called them the business an interpolation.

Beyonces just removed a sample by colleagues from one of her songs after police accused her of theft. The sample features in Beyoncé's new album Renaissance on the song Energy said it mimicked the tune of her song milkshake. Have a listen.

Poldark and nightly.

Warm it up.

Police said she hadn't given permission for the song to be used.

We've met each other, we know each other, we have mutual friends. It's not hard. She can contact.

It's the second change Beyoncé has had to make to her new album. The lyrics and her song heated have been updated after criticism. It included a derogatory term for a form of cerebral palsy.

Wow Queen Bee, how the mighty have fallen. I didn't. I don't want to talk about the. Other part of that but I. Didn't because I wanna stay until the milkshakes. The milkshakes are definitely the centre of my focus at the moment I did not hear. Much in that.

I think Queen Queen Bee did a bit. Of a. I think she did, and I think the beat, I think the beat. And I do. I'm not.

I I just Kelis if you're listening, all credit goes to you for that the don't don't come after us.

And I think I think the issue. That she had. As well was that Beyoncé credited all of these other people across that? Album and I think.

Just overlooked it.

Beyoncé may have even worked with the Neptunes. On that album. So I think that also.

Oh well.

Alarm bells there, but I yeah, I think they kind of grabbed a bit of the. Beat and I believe there was like a bit. Of a La La La La la over over the top. Of it. So and.

Yeah. OK.

Look, the fact that she ended up. Removing it, she obviously agreed.

Alright, back to the milkshakes. Yes. Can we get some kind of clarification as to as to what? The milkshakes?

What the milk?

There's been a lot of.

Actually, uh.

Talk over the years of what the milkshakes are.

What are they?

I don't know if I. Want to talk about what the talk was? Cause there's lots of different. Well, we'll start with probably the the cleaner options potentially break. Booty, things like that. And then it goes on to things that are progressively more.

Right.

Adult, so I won't go. Into so she's obviously been asked.

Thought you were going to sugar reef and look. What you ended up with, yeah.

It was, it was, yes.

Possibly like it night at Sugar Reef, yeah. She has been. Asked about it a lot over the years and I think when she was first asked about it, she said she gave this really kind of wishy washy answer. She said something sensual that makes a woman stand out, but I think she alluded to potentially breath.

Well, it's like all. Good art, isn't it really? It's open to interpretation.

Then in 2017, she said it was a metaphor that means lots of things. And she likens it to the special quality that makes a woman attractive, like the dessert as a delicious treat is what she said. So I don't think we're ever going to know what.

It's about *****. It's. Come on. It's about *****. Have you seen the film clip? It's about *****. That's what it is. They're *****. Calm down everybody.

Is there lots of breasts in the clip? I haven't watched the clip. Watch the clip. It's a.

Great clip. It's funny. It's a very funny clip and it's good.

Is it? A great song.

Yeah, well, it certainly has stood the test of time and like you were saying, I can't believe it's 2020 years old. So now it's more like my sandbags. Bring all the boys to the yard. Anyway, we've got some albums or have we? Spoken about those already.

No, we haven't.

Ohh, good. OK. So we've got, well, what's out?

Had those already, but. It follows on nicely because her album Tasty, which features the. Song Milkshake was out this week 20 years ago.

My milkshake brings all the boys to the God and they're like, it's better than yours. That in their life is better than yours. Damn right, it's better than yours. I could teach you, but I have to teach you.

It's about *****. Just saying.

Guy Sebastian's just as I am album was dropped featuring angles brought me here.

Yeah, I'm not playing that again.

Still gotta find the nosey CD's. Just quiet.

Yeah. You know, after we. Did it last week. It kind of stayed stuck in my head for a significant amount of time. It lived there.

Which version? The guy or the noisy?

The guy version and it lived there rent free and.

It is one that. Gets stuck in your head, isn't it?

Yeah, and I'm. I'm not happy about it. And so I don't, I just don't wanna incept it again.

Even Guys's version is a bit wingy the bit where they go. You just feel a bit wingy, doesn't it?

See stop. No. See. Now you've done it. Don't. Please don't do that. I'm trying to keep it out of my head. You've incepted me there. It's there again.

Good, great, glad, glad to be of assistance.

*** **** it.

My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard and they're like, it's better than your.

That's better.

112 brought out their album hot and wet. The time I I don't think it. I don't think it did anything.

They don't even trying to use metaphors there, are they really?

No, we'll just. Just all the cards on the. Table and.

Hot and wet.

All that there, hot and wet, featuring the title track, cold, hot and. Wet, also featuring Luda.

Work if you work it, tweak it, twerk it. I feel like you're every imperfection is perfect. Louder. Yeah. What you heard is true. I make you do things you ain't even know you could. Do gotta weak in. The knees cause my back is strong and.

You wonder why.

Your girls wanna tag. Along cause them birds is jealous. My words embellish. Plus, they heard that I kiss every curbing.

Goodness me.

Ohh Luda that's how. That's how you get it high charting single chucka. Louder on it. Back in the early 2000s. Ohh, absolutely. They played that as well. 112 dance with me.

They'd play that at Sugar Reef, wouldn't they? I can see how it evolved into an adults entertainment video if they're doing stuff like that, that's that. That's a bit rivalled.

It was.

A good club?

I really miss. It good club.

Do you know there was an? There was another album that came out and I I think it's in spite of it's the title of this particular song. Motörhead live at the Brixton Academy. This is no class and I feel like it's got a lot more class than some of these other hip hop musicians that. We're listening to.

No late.

You can just tell by that recording that they are the loudest band on the planet. And you're not.

Didn't you buy a new Motörhead T-shirt yesterday?

I've got. I've got a Christmas Motörhead T-shirt.

You brought an accidental add-on purchase.

And then I accidentally bought a a Motörhead trucker. Cap that says each little girl.

Are you gonna wear that with your? Christmas shirt to Christmas.

Probably yes, yes, cause the Motörhead Christmas shirt features the war pig with the Santa hat on it and instead of saying Motörhead England, it says Motörhead North Pole. I thought yes, I just hope it ships in time and it's coming from the UK, so I'll probably arrive in January. I'll have to wait till next year.

Ohh, that's nice. That is nice. Don't know about the hat. Ah yes.

Yeah. At least I'll have time to lose that Christmas weight and fit into it again.

We had an album from we had an album from Snoop Dogg. It was called Death Row Records presents the dog best.

Flying down the window.

Of the work. And I'm wondering. I'm wondering, then, if Snoop had any say in it, because has he left death row records? At this point. Is this a Suge Knight thing? And then I'm thinking about it and I'm thinking, isn't it lovely? It's come full circle cause he owns Death Row records now, but at the time I don't know if he had anything to do with this album.

Well, he does, yes. It was almost like he was in an abusive relationship and they maybe just put this out to get some money.

It was a greatest hits with a lot of hits from ***** *****. There was some from the chronic. They even had snoops upside your head that.

Probably a bit.

Of a regret. But this fantastic single with Tupac?

Smokes won't. Nothing but the cakes book. Nothing buddy. Thanks. But it ain't nothing.

That's obviously Tupac, not Snoop Dogg, cause it didn't. You didn't get the bit at one minute, 10 seconds.

That is no. No, I didn't. But you could hear Snoop Dogg. In the background. Going and they said boss play.

Boss, he's breathing loudly the background.

It's exhaling. Yeah, he's smoking, hasn't.

No, he's quit. I don't know if that's true at at time of recording, he said. Please, please leave me in peace. Like, don't ask me about it. Let me.

He he's. He's here. That's. Respect my privacy at this.

Work. Yeah, something. Like that but. Yeah, I I. Think there's probably a big announcement coming? That's my guess.

Guy smokes weed in public and pins his whole rap persona on the fact that he smokes weed all the time and then decides to quit and ask people to respect his privacy.

Maybe it is. Maybe there's?

Yeah, there's gotta be something more. So by the time this is out, I'm sure the big reveal would have would have would have occurred. That's a great song, though. I do. I do love.

Yeah. Yeah. You're drunk. Yeah. There's gotta be a joke in there somewhere.

That song with with two.

Good, excellent. Sorry about not getting the gravel one.

I know cause. Yeah, there was a bit that I really liked. But you didn't get it, but.

That's fine. Sorry. You get what you pay for.

Offspring also had an. Album release, I think it was called Splinter featuring this single hit that.

That's actually quite dark. That song it's, you know, it's about not very nice guys that, you know, trying to knock at chicks up and then leave.

Them. Ohh is it? That's not how I interpreted it.

Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. If you really. Drill down into the lyrics, which I don't know if you want to.

Do you remember the start of that?

Song. Yeah. This, this, this. Part of it, which was like. Hang on. Yes, I remember that.

OK, is. It just me or does that sound like Funky Town?

Doesn't sound just like it, but it has similarities.

I all I could think of when that single came. Out was funky town. Give me a keeter.

Yes, any day of the week.

Did. Yeah, it did sound like Funky Town, so I didn't. Like it, OK. Not a big fan of the. Offspring actually, do you? Do you like the offspring?

I know you're a fan. What? I liked him way back in the day when they brought out that album Smash. And it had.

So that's pretty self esteem.

No, it had self esteem on it. It had. You gotta keep them separated on it as well. Yeah. Yeah. They were pretty cool. I saw him at a big day out. They were fun. It was a hot day. And then, yeah, I just kind of I I think it was like.

Is that OK? Ah, I didn't mind that song.

The punk was hitting the mainstream at the time and they all one of those bands and it was like everyone's listening to Green Day and the offspring. Stuff you gotta get on. It and I was like, I'll try and I just, I couldn't do it. I just couldn't. It couldn't stick with it. I couldn't stick with it. But if if we're talking about karaoke, I can stick with this.

Reason for me?

Now it's not.

A particularly good song. It's not a good song, it's, and it's probably not a song that is all that well received, but it is in my register when I'm doing karaoke, I think.

Super singstar. Here we fell. We've gotten Super Sing star on that a number of times.

I I can. I've had singstar on the PlayStation which Mel and I have spent many a drunken evening indulging in very good fun. That was that was back when.

PS2 was the that one wasn't the.

Springdale was good on the PlayStation 2.

And you had to have a cold. They weren't wireless back then, you had to plug it in. You couldn't get too far away. You couldn't, but you couldn't dance and you couldn't get too far away from the TV because.

Yes, which meant that they they didn't need to do, you didn't. Need to faff around with the Bluetooth. Well you could.

You had it cause.

You could incorporate the chord into the dance with your microphones. Wouldn't last super long.

Nina Mike stands. Yes, that I think that that's the. One, we did the best at ever. I think that one.

Yeah, which is disappointing cause it's not a song I particularly wanted to see.

Anyway, it's a great song title track from the album. The reason by Hoover sandwich came out this week 20 years ago.

This, thank you. Yes. Yeah, the reason Hoobastank the worst one of the worst video clips of all time. Yeah. So like the girl steps off the footpath and she gets hit by a car and the guys reaction is just.

Ah, someone got hit by a car, didn't they? It's sort. Of like Oh yeah.

Google it have. A look it's strange to say the least.

And you'd think that you'd build up to the girl getting. Hit at the end. It was like, Oh my God, I can't believe that happened. It would. Like, just slap you in the. Face right there but it.

I haven't been. I don't even know even. I mean, it's.

Starts the video. It is. On it is on and so now I've got to sing and be enthusiastic after I just saw someone. Get hit by a car.

Yeah, cause it was on the clip.

It's difficult, difficult, very, very difficult seeing I'm surprised we got some missing star.

On singstar. So I think that's what. Helps me get into character. It's very strange. Very, very strange. Yeah, I don't know why and and. I mean, who stank like, what the hell is a Hooper?

Really, no.

Nick anyway.

Where are they now? I don't know. I.

Doesn't matter, music news, the Billboard Music Awards, hosted by Ryan Seacrest.

Out hosted. Yep.

With colour commentary from Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson.

Thank you.

Well, as well as presenting the first award, Jessica and I are here for a billboard. First, we're going to be appearing throughout the night as the shows colour commentators kind of like on, you know, Monday night.

Football and Nick, this is a live show. So don't say anything ditzy or stupid. I I keep telling myself the sex is worth it.

As that, I watched that award show and as that progressed, there's more and more bits of them and they're very cringe worthy. I just knew that that marriage was. Not gonna make it.

Do you think Nick wrote the script? He there was a lot of references to him in bed.

No, I don't think they had any writing of it.

There's a lot of references to him in bed. Maybe, maybe because now that they're married, she's taking the she's taking the purity ring off and it's all about.

Do you know who I reckon?

The in the. Bed this stuff and it was just too much.

I reckon I reckon her dad wrote it. I reckon Papa Joe.

It was just way too much and then he was just bagging her out for being dipsy the whole time. It was horrible. It's horrible. Stay out of it. Nick Lachey, stay out of the Billboard Awards. Just stay out of everything.

Did it. Yeah, it. They just they had no chemistry, they had no chemistry whatsoever. And I'm like, you know, you know, who's got chemistry like us we could have.

We're not interested. Yay. Yay.

Been colour commenters.

We would have been funnier. Wouldn't have.

We would been cancelled after the first commercial break guarantee you.

But I wouldn't have discussed the bedroom antics. It's not. That's not appropriate for the Billboard Music Awards and might have discussed your ****** piercing.

What bedroom antics? Ohh God, wind the window down. Get that window. Yeah. Thank goodness. Only two of those photos came out. Anyway, who else performed at the awards? It was. $0.50 did he win?

I think Beyoncé performed, but big winners on the night were $0.50, Shania Twain, Beyoncé, Audioslave, and Chingy Chingy did he won for Best Nursery rhymes.

Oh, nice. Tingy dingy. Thank you. Did he thank Mother Goose? In his speeches.

Doctor Seuss as well, yeah.

Let's go to entertainment. There are so many movies this week, so many movies like this one.

I have been hired to help suppress the rebellion of yet another tribal leader.

Apparently this is the only job for which I am suited.

For six months, work timed to receive 3. Years captain's pay. Teaching Orientals to soldier.

What can the general tell me about this man? This with samurai katsumoto?

We will pay you. $400.00 a month. So what do you say we? Put the past behind us.

With the God.

Yes. And if you didn't pick it that. Was Tom Cruise. Tom Cruise in that film, the film was the last samurai. Tom Cruise and Ken Watanabe also had Billy Connolly in it. Believe it or not, it was a pretty good movie actually. Surprisingly, yeah, I did. I did. So he was a American military officer back from back in the, like, days of the.

Did you watch it?

The War of Independence sort of days, you know, like the the Confederates and the Yankees. Yeah, those guys. And he was hired by the Emperor of Japan to go over and train the military in western warfare to then fight against some of the warlords in the samurai warrior class because they wanted to. Kinda. Make their society more westernised and trade friendly. It's a very interesting film and it was quite good anyway. What happens is is he's amidst all this training, actually go and fight the samurai. And he gets captured and has to come face to face with the guy. The samurai that he's trained everyone against. And I think that they become friends.

Oh wow.

Well, that's nice.

And then I think he ends up maybe fighting for the other side. I'm not sure, but it it was good it. Was a long time since.

So good that.

I've seen.

You remember it well, 66% critics score 83% audience.

It ohh look I'm flat. Out remembering what I had for breakfast, give me a break. Then we had this one with Russell Crowe.

Alright lads, touchwood, Mr Blake. They.

Turn three times. May the Lord St preserves.

Just to break it off.

You're in very good hands. Seven weeks sailing and he happened on our exact position. Well, then perhaps he was looking for us. Damn, he was. Good. An act of war will cripple them.

With basic repairs we can get home as.

We are, we're not.

Going home.

The power of nature will threaten them. Our enemy has more than twice our guns, more than. Twice our numbers and we. Supposed to stop?

Torn between fulfilling his duty.

Captain's not called Lucky Jack for no reason, phantom or no lucky Jackal ever.

And the lives of the men he commands.

Must face the invincible.

Fight like you, Jack the Hunter, becomes the hunted. Well, then, there's not a moment to lose.

I can't actually place the accent that Russell Crowe is trying to do for that. That was master and commander. The far side of the world, which is on my pile of shame. I've been meaning to watch that a couple of times, and I've. Just never gotten. Around to it. So it's I I believe it's a true story. Is it based on a true story? Maybe not.

I don't know. I saw some pictures from it and the pictures from it. They reminded me of was it dream world or movie world? One of the worlds where they did a reenactment of water world.

Ohh, that was Universal Studios.

Universal studio. OK well, when? I saw the pictures.

That's a much better world than dream world or movie world.

Looked at the pictures, I thought that looks like that reenactment we saw of waterworlds.

It's set in 1805 what the will set in the future. They smoke cigarettes and use gasoline.

That's what the pictures.

Looked like it looks like that. It looked like the people that did the water worlds, that's what the pictures looked like. It's not my fault.

From the studio that bought you water world, I'm not sure if it was it's set in 1805. I think it is both untrue story. The HMS surprised the brash Captain Jack Aubrey, who's played by Russell Crowe, his trusted friend of ships goalie surgeon Stephen Maturin, who was played by Paul Bettany. Paul Bettany, who played vision in the Marvel stuff. They're they're ordered to hunt down and capture this French.

That's what it looked like in the pictures.

Vessel on off the South American coast and I think that's like, you know, them against Napoleon, he's. Thing they're trying to, you know, beat them their own. You know, there's, I don't know. It's like it's a fish out of water, but they're on the water scene. So thing. So yeah.

In the world with the water. People liked it, though 85. Percent critics and 80% audience, though.

Yeah, I think it's a. Good movie. Like I said, it's my pilot said. Everyone's like you should watch it. The last movie I saw was Russell Crowe in it was the Pope's exorcist, where he was pretending to be an Italian exorcist.

We should probably watch it.

And had to rid this family of this demon and Russell Crowe with an Italian accent. He's a lot of.

He likes accents, doesn't he?

Loves it's a lot of fun.

Last one I saw him. In was the road rage one he was.

Ohh, that was good. Yeah, that was good. What was that called?

Scary in.

I don't know, but he was hungry.

It was was intrigued. It was something like that. Ohh, was it cold?

Honey, I mean.

Ohh unhinged. Yeah. Ohh not triggered unhinged when idiot unhinged. Yeah, he was unhinged in it. Was good. Yeah, he was like.

So I never. I never took my horn with anyone now.

Yeah, he was in a hotel and he tried to get in touch with Danielle Spencer. He didn't get hold of a phone, so he threw a bakelite phone at someone's head. And I know that was real life. Sorry, we got this other movie that came. Out on the 9th of December for the kids.

What if you could escape?

That I'm not playing that if they start with Coldplay, I just can't do it. I'll do it.

What if you could escape to a far away world without parents?

Forget them, Wendy. Forget them all. Come away to Neverland.

Without any rules, without anyone telling you what to do.

Come with me. We'll never, never have to worry about. One of things again.

Heaven is an awfully long time.

So you lost me at Coldplay, but that was a that was a remake of Peter Pan, a live action version of Peter Pan that came out on the 9th of December. And it it just didn't.

Yes, I'm paying attention.

I mean it, I mean. It scored OK with the critics, but. The the dude who played Peter Pan. Was just a bit creepy. I just felt like he was grooming the. Children in it, they say.

Jeremy symptom.

Come and hang out with me. Never, never, blah, blah, blah, adult problems, etcetera. Please come with me. I've got some video games in the basement. It just.

Yeah, it just sounded a bit creepy. I didn't like it.

Well, one of the critics said there was nothing innocent about this Peter Pan. He's leering and repulsive twerp.

See, there you go. Wow, that's well, that's. That's more harsh than what I said. And that's a legit critic. Yeah, just, you know, the Peter Pan story by now, they've told it a bazillion times. I've never been. Have you? Are you a Peter Pan person? Do you like the Peter Pan story? Did you watch the Disney ones or hook?

Don't feel bad. The my I. Or any of that. I think I saw whatever the kids one was when I was a kid at the movies. The only the only time I've really thought of Peter Pan lately. Was what's the. What's the cartoon? I mean that our son watched when he was little.

Ohh Jake and the Neverland pirates.

That's that's, that's about. It for my. Peter Pan repertoire is that show? That's alright.

Yeah, yeah, that's probably the best of a bad bunch. If I'm being honest. Anyway, that that was Peter.

Pan. Ohh no I. Had the audio, I had a record or the OR the cassette, you know where you played it?

Ohh and you know it's time to turn. The page when you hear Tinkerbell, yeah.

Turn the page when you have the time. Yes, when Tinkerbell must have been a cassette or might have been a ohh no, it was it was.

Disney only get them on vinyl.

A vinyl my.

Yeah. Worth more money if they're on. Bottle probably get that.

Yes, that's that actually, yes, that and the and it got very frantic. At one point they were all. Like getting all out of sorts over something, yeah.

Yeah. Well, look at the crocodile with the the clock. That he swallowed and all that stuff. Yeah, you should go and see how much that's worth on Discogs.

Yeah, I probably should I.

Few 100 bucks.

Think it's still? In my parents house, yeah.

Is it really?

Yeah, probably would be or something like once.

We should go there tomorrow. Have a. Look, uh, what? What brings you here? What is the pleasure? This is?

Cash money. It's Peter Pan.

Well, it's been short and sweet this week and we'll bring it to a natural conclusion with the hatches, matches and dispatches segment. Now look, no real deaths or weddings to report this week. No real births.

As such.

Ah, there was. There was a few tik. Tokers but they. Were all boring. So I know how.

Damn. Seriously. Like, yeah.

You feel about that? I'll only get the. Stand out ones like the ASMR ones or the. Was the ocean one someone ocean famous ocean? You have a famous ocean. Famous ocean was good.

I don't know. That's that's. That me forgetting that in the in the space of time.

Famous ocean and the ASMR guy that was eating the lasagna with him.

It's a metaphor for TikTok, you know, I don't remember. Any of it, because it's it's like.

Yeah, it's like.

What tastes good? Remember him? You like him.

It's flashing the pan rubbish. No, I don't. Want to talk about it?

OK, so well, no, we've got. We've got someone legit this.

Well, we'll just do this. Straight into the clue, a celebrity, a massive celebrity who's having a birthday this week that said this.

Part of growing up and moving into new. Chapters of your life. Is about catch and release. What I mean by that is knowing what things to keep. And what things to release? You can't carry all things, all grudges, all updates on your ex decide. What is yours to hold? And let the. Rest go.

Wow. Wise words from if you said Taylor Swift. You would be correct. It's Taylor Swift's birthday on the 13th of December.

Is that why she puts? All her exes into songs is that her form of release maybe.

Maybe I I well, she hasn't really let go. She's made a lot of money out of that heartbreak. Hasn't she, really? Yeah. Well, it's her birthday singer-songwriter Mega *.

So how she just let's go.

Have you got tickets? Have you got tickets for your kids?

I actually am regretting not ever getting into her stuff and not getting tickets, to be honest, because it looks like a good time and I feel really left out.

I'm really grateful that you haven't, but I do know productivity across the nation ground to a halt when tickets went on sale for her concert. Every man and their dog and their children were lining up for tickets for Taylor Swift.

Feel really left out. And I'm sorry, yes.

Through the Ticketek portal. Which is a bit rubbish I reckon, because it says you go in the. Now and you log on to buy tickets and I did it for a much smaller concert and I was able to get through very quickly. It didn't take me half a day, but it's like you're in the Ticketek lounge and then it keeps refreshing every 5 minutes. So it it it it it's like a bottleneck and it lets people through in waves. So that they don't crash the website for really big events and.

So is it kind of like when you queue out the front of ticket sack and you queue overnight and they sort of let five people into? The four year at a time.

Yeah, but it's more like EQ at the front of tick tick and you queue overnight and then you fell asleep and then all of a sudden, everyone else is in front of you cause you fell asleep.

And then gonna fight people. Yeah, in sleeping bag.

I don't know. Anyway, happy birthday to Taylor Swift.

She's sold over 200 million now, but.

I know that's insane.

200 million. The guy Sebastian's 300 and.

In album sales, album sales now in the world of streaming, that is a big deal.

She is also the highest grossing female performer ever and the most streamed woman on Spotify and Apple Music with.

In addition to 200. That's what I'm saying, yeah.

She the one. And she wasn't on Apple music for a.

While wasn't there something?

She said she. She said some stuff. She said some stuff and did some things and she pulled all the stuff off there. But now she's back on there again.

Yeah, she's back, is she? Well, that's good. First ever billionaire with music is the main source of their income. 12 Grammys Prime time Emmy, 40 American Music award.

Is that a fact?

You being.

A billionaire at that age.

29 Billboard Music Awards 23 MTV Video Music Award recording artist of the.

Oh my God.

Year 101. Guinness World Record I'd really like to know what.

Right.

Probably for the.

Those 100.

Tickets, concerts, tickets sell out, things like that. Mm-hmm. Yeah.

And one records are.

Well, you know, 20 years ago she was, she was quite humble. Just young kid seeing the national anthem at a A Sixers game in Pennsylvania.

Does that star spangled? Oh, the land.

Today, Taylor Swift.

There was a. Really cute picture as well that Britney Spears put up the other day and it. Was with Taylor. I think she Taylor met Brittany and came backstage with Brittany at one of her concerts in the early 2000s, and I think she may have. Even sung for Britney. Really. Yeah.

You would have to say that with hype and and all of those things that she is bigger than Britney Spears ever was.

A really cute picture. Ah, absolutely.

Yeah, yeah.

So that performance was from 2002. But 2000? And three is when she really started pursuing her music. Yeah, her and her parents worked with a talent manager in New York. She started out actually modelling for Abercrombie and Fitch. Hope. What?

Yes, at that age well know.

I I think she was sort of modelling but also. Performing and and doing music as part of that, she.

Right. Well, fits. The brand, you know, white, blonde hair, blue eyes.

She had an original song included on a Maybelline compilation CD and she was meeting with a lot of major record labels at the time she performed A showcase. The RCA records. She was given an artist development deal and began making frequent trips to Nashville with her mother to help break into the country music scene.

Yes, she she spent so much time in Nashville that people actually thought she was from there, but she's not from Pennsylvania. Hmm.

She I think they moved there when she was 14.

For her career, yes, yes.

For her career? Yep, and she attended high school there and then two years later, I think it was 2006. She released her first album, self-titled album Taylor Swift.

Good for her. That's just self-made person. If ever I've seen one and now she. Dating Travis Kelsey.

I love that story. Did you see the bit where?

The tight end from the Kansas City Chiefs.

She sang some lyrics about him coming home to her the calmer thing, and he was so excited. It was gorgeous. Loved it.

Yes, and you? Well, he he chased after her for a while. He. Yeah. He made all these friendship bracelets and he kept sending her friendship bracelets. Like he's spamming her with friendship bracelets, apparently. And then she eventually agreed to go on a.

Ohh did. That's nice.

I don't like. His shirts, though his shirts are a bit loud.

Date with him. Travis, he's an NFL player. They all, they all dress like freaks. They're very strange characters. Well, he's.

They're bit. They're a bit much. I hope she launches these shirts.

You know what?

But he seems lovely. I do like him as a couple.

He doesn't play for he doesn't play for a team that I like, but he does seem like a pretty nice.

Yes, I think so.

Guy and he's. He's brother plays for the Philadelphia Eagles. Yeah, yeah. And he's also seems like a nice guy. Jason, Kelsey, Travis and Jason. And they do a podcast together, which is pretty cool, actually.

I love her too. Going to the games and she was hanging out with his dad and she's high fiving the other wives and girlfriends. She seems so down to Earth.

Do you know what? I think it's nice that she goes to the games and she's supportive, but I don't love her going to. Them because every two seconds they freaking cut to the corporate box to see what Taylor Swift is thinking. And again, every single Kansas City Chiefs games. It drives me insane. I'm like, can we? And then I realise it's NFL and it stops and starts so much. Anyway, that every time they cut to Taylor Swift up in the corporate box I.

I'm interested to know what you think.

Just go off. And take a **** anyway, something else to do. Anyway, you can too now, because that's the end of the show. So if you've been holding out, you can now.

This is not.

The early 2000s or the 90s or 80s you could. Take us with you to. The toilet if you're playing. On your device you go to the.

Toilet while you're listening. Of course. Yes, that's where I watch all my favourite tik toks. Anyway, you can find us on TikTok as well as other social media. Like Facebook and Instagram and.

Have you started putting some things on there again?

Yeah, I do it from time to time. Just to test the waters and then I get shy and back away.

Again, creates a bit of outrage and another way.

I'm a bit like Travis Kelsey sending Taylor Swift friendship bracelets. That's how TikTok. Works with me. I'm. Like Ohh do you like me? Yes. No. No, shy now anyway. Anything happening next week that we should be Speaking of?

The Lord of the Rings movie is officially released everywhere else, so the world goes crazy and their spaceship, one flight 11 P Some some spaceship with a supersonic fly.

Ohh good.

Nice. You like a bit of? Space stuff we'll talk about.
