Prince steals show at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

The news this week is positively and literally astronomical, with scientists announcing the discovery of 90377 Sedna, a dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt. We break down the selection criteria for a planet vs a dwarf planet and find out why Pluto was downgraded.

Terror in Taiwan this week in 2004 with Taiwanese president Chen Shui-bian is shot the day before the country's presidential election. Conspiracy theories exist to this day.

The year is 2004. Your polyphonic ringtone habit is sending you broke. George W Bush is sworn in for a second term, and in spite of everything going on, the most controversial thing is a wardrobe malfunction at the Super Bowl. T -, 20 rewind 20 years with Joe and Mel.

Week.

Oh, 14 March 2004.

The rest is. You know what? I'm very forgetful 20. Hello.

There. Stop trying to make fetch happen.

You're fired.

What we're waiting for.

This is harder than I thought it would be.

My fellow Americans, let's roll.

Welcome to the podcast where we do make fetch happen each and every week. We go and fetch what happened this week in history. 20 years ago, we rewind all the way back to 2004. It's called t -. 20 and these are your hosts. I'm Joe. That's Mel over there. Hello, Mel. Hello.

Hello and you're looking so fetched tonight. What they say?

I'm looking fetch.

Isn't that what fetch is? About, that's so fetch you're fetch.

Yeah, I think that's what it was supposed to, but I can't believe Mean Girls is back. Anyway, they made a movie of it again. They remade Mean Girls. Can you believe it? Anyway, that's not what we're talking about this week. We got a big week this week. What week are?

It's back. It's come full circle. Hmm. I can.

Looking out.

14 to 20 March 2004.

Yes. And the kids have got something to say.

Got a weird orbit. That was discovered by Michael Brown. 2003 was when the planet was found.

2003 is when the planet was found, but it was made official this time 20 years ago. We've got some astrological scientific stuff happening in the news this week.

And I love it when there's a wrap involved. That was great. Yeah. Nerd wrap. One of my favourites.

Well, especially when nerds do it, it's always just a little bit 4 keys. Anyway, Speaking of Orchies, can we talk about wrestling? We're.

After two dazzling decades, wrestle Mania 20 returned to where it all began.

This is Madison Square Garden, where WrestleMania was forced.

WrestleMania goes back to Madison Square and the 20th, WrestleMania, this time 20 years ago. Who would have done it? I was there for the first one. Isn't there, but I watched the first one. It's big.

You watched the first one is the is the rocket #20.

I'll have to smell around and see if he's cooking anything. I'm not sure. I'm not sure I don't. The rock did not. Main event WrestleMania 20, but it was a huge WrestleMania with a bunch of stars who are no longer here and one that's been cancelled completely. Yeah, it's a it is controversial to this day. Anyway. We've got that and then we've got this.

Oh.

The revolution. In television towards its earth, fox tell Ditto will change the way you feel about television forever. Ever.

That's a bit dramatic, isn't it?

When you got a big. Balls voice like that. It's something serious.

And a. Choir of archangels? Yes. Foxtel Digital makes its debut this time 40 years ago. We'll unpack that as well in the show, so there's a few things for you just to keep you enticed, a couple of tidbits for you. Yeah, it's a very exciting time for the podcast as well because we've discovered that we definitely have more than.

It's gotta be the truth, hmm.

It's not. This will.

Ohh yes, you received a message the other day from Scotty.

Yeah.

Yes. Yeah, shout out to my good mate Scotty, who does the breakfast show over on 1053. Two CA. If you don't listen to the breakfast show on 1053, two CA what are? You. Doing get amongst it Scotty and Homsy best breakfast show in Canberra.

Over there.

There's there's no other breakfast and and the best thing about two CA is they don't fire their staff, so they're really good. Breakfast station. It's. It's so nice to have a pier from back in the day who is still relevant working in the industry, listening to our podcast and singing our praises like that just makes my day each and every week. It is very.

Very kindness.

Mind, hopefully it's not too charitable. I I don't think it is. It's not like I hate listen or anything like that. I think he genuinely enjoys the show and I genuinely enjoy that. He genuinely enjoys the show, but Scotty was at the Fishwick markets the other day and he's like dude, he messages me. He's like I was listening to the podcast and.

Yeah.

Good markets.

And I was walking along and there was a guy in a Toyota Camry and I I could hear he was Co listening to the podcast that well, so.

Hmm.

There's two people.

Listening to the podcast.

Ohh.

That's amazing in public.

Wow.

I know cause there's certain things that I won't do in public and listening to our podcast. You're probably one of them.

Thank you Camry driver. I'm very excited about this. I'm gonna go down to the Fishwick markets and buy thanks every person that's a bit salty, isn't it? But I will.

Yeah.

Just to say if he could fault the God, that's that's really weird. Imagine if you stuck the head in your head in his window and. Ohh hi, I'm Mel. I see you're listening to my podcast. A dude hit himself. He drove off.

Like get out of my car, woman.

I'd liken that to like so we know, like Taylor Swift, everyone's still, are we still?

Are you are you comparing yourself to Taylor Swift's?

Talking about Taylor Swift. No, but what I'm saying is is, imagine how it would have felt. This is the kind of feeling that I got from that message, just that message.

To taytay. Yeah. OK.

Tay. Tay, you know, has gone in. She's been playing around the traps for all of those years. And finally, finally, she gets in the car. One day she's driving along and she hears her song on the radio.

Ohh he's herself, so this is the equivalent of that. OK, I think so yeah. Because sometimes you go ohh these data are these stats. Are they correct? Is there actually anyone out there? We still haven't heard from Hess from our listener and Hess and I'm I was beginning to doubt the.

Yeah.

Yes, yes.

That's right. That's right.

Stats.

That's right, Mel, get Lockheed Martin on the phone. We're gonna put a.

But I don't doubt. Sorry.

Down payment on a private jet. Alright, it's time for the Hatch matches and dispatches. Clue. The segment that we do at the end of the show, we talk about at the beginning of the show to hopefully get you to listen right through to the end of the show. It's an old school technique that they used to use back in. The biz and I feel like we're black belts at it, which is why we're doing it so well right now. I don't know if you know, again, going back to the data, there's a curve.

The curve goes down the longer the the time of the the shower goes down. I don't know how many people stay through the I reckon the Camry stayed through at the end camera driver.

Ohh really? So that I come back doesn't.

Yeah, there's a few. There's a few.

Well, Camry drivers are sensible. It's a sensible, reliable.

They are. It is a. Car, isn't it?

Yeah, cool. Yeah. Got a lot.

Yes.

Of grunt too, can call a caravan.

It's got it's. Right. It's got enough power to kind of get you to where you need to go.

Big boot space.

Lots of boot space. Excellent for moving families around.

Yeah. And the seats, they're kind of Bucky. They're very comfortable, very comfortable, but.

I feel like it's the choice for the sensible Uber driver. The the Camry. Yeah, yeah.

The sensible ohh yes. Yeah, yeah. Not not like some. Of these, showboat Uber drivers that drive the. Was that one? We went in the pole star. I thought it was. I thought it was. I thought you.

While the Polestar the electric charge.

Said we're getting a pulsar. I.

Was like, yes, that.

And listen, yeah, now we're getting a pole star.

Is so retro. And then we got in this weird thing and he was he was so showboat. He wasn't. He's.

Electric car. He was. He's really.

Like look, this does this. And this is showing us. All the buttons I don't care.

He's really talking up his. Car and I'm like ohh yeah.

I don't care. You've got. You've got one of those. Air fresheners that just smell like someone's had a vomit here.

Yeah, yeah.

He was very proud of his car and I'm like, so why are you doing Ubers? And he's like to pay it off. Yeah. And I'm like, so you've got this beautiful car, and he's bringing all these stinky, stinky randos into it.

For the. All these randos who are probably having a form in. The back seat, yes.

Yeah, when you could have maybe just, you know, kept a little bit of money in your pocket, bought yourself. A.

Camry. Reliable. Easy to park.

Reliable, sensible. Probably. Enjoy it. Enjoy it by yourself. Yeah, very comfortable. So the curve stay. It goes down. They don't come back.

So. It goes, yeah. No, no, it means like, the the time it's time spent listening, TSL time spent listening just sort of drop off.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Towards the end, well.

So the clues.

It's a big ask we do.

No.

Talk for usually more than an hour.

Do you reckon if I said to them this week that it involves poop?

Ohh that that's going to be a straight line. It's not going to dip at all straight through. You're like what? Yep, I'm in.

Yeah, they're going to take the mould. The light at the end, if you will. There's poop. Well, we're definitely here. He doesn't love a bit of poop. We all do it. We all experience it. We all have a little bit of a chuckle about it. Yeah. OK. Celebrity having a birthday that says.

Everyone loves the Fuji.

Oh.

Love to have a laugh. It. Yes, so mature.

This after we do the toast. I was like, what is that? The smell in my crib yo.

That is my favourite favourite episode of a TV show ever. I think. I think about that probably once a month.

Best reality TV show moment ever. Are you serious?

Because I just think, how did that happen? That is amazing. That is so amazing. And then I.

Yeah, yeah. I reckon I reckon the producers of that particular show also thought about how did that happen? And then in the same breath, we're like, I'm so glad that happened. This is gonna be wonderful. We're gonna tell the world and we'll tell the world who that is at the end of the show.

Have a little Google. Who's gonna deal with who's gonna deal with the aftermath? Ohh gosh. Hmm. If you stay. Stay. Please stay. Stay.

Before we get to any of those shenanigans, we need to really get into some sensible business, which is the news, although this is this is better news than the news that we experienced last week brought to you by Camry. Wonderful. Excellent. I would love. Geez, I would love a Toyota.

Wrote to you by Cameron. Principal news brought to you by Cameron.

Sponsorship. They are such reliable cars, I tell ya. Everyone asked me what I you know, we're going on a bit of a car tangent here which which?

They are. I know. Can't kill them. Ohh my pulsar was good too Bob.

Yeah, he was OK.

Yeah, great car.

We had some great times in that. Well, yeah. But you know, if we had a camera, we would have had, we would have a lot more room to have some great times in that car as well. Anyway, let's let's let's go over to the news. We're getting astrological. We're getting scientific. There was a well, there was a big natural object discovered in the solar system.

Driving to the fisheye markets. Great. Boots thanks, yes. Why?

And it was the IT was the discovery of 90377 Sedna. It was the farthest natural object in the solar system so far observed. It was discovered back in November 2003, actually. But I guess they were.

Hmm.

To make sure they knew what they were doing before they let everyone know what they had found. Like you don't want to go too early. Do you know what I mean?

Yeah, yeah. Don't know. Prematurely announced. Yeah. And natural objects.

Exactly because you know anything could happen. It maybe it's there, maybe it's not. Maybe it's just like somebody put a fingerprint on the telescope, something for that.

I think.

Yeah, or a fly flew on there. Like in summer rental. Yeah.

Exactly. On the radar. That's right. Yes. So they wanted to be sure of it. And they also they have to vote. Did you know this? They have to vote on whether or not to officially number it and and declare it and give it a name. Yes.

On the radar happens to the.

Best of us?

So vote as to whether or not everyone saw it.

And there's a bunch of criteria that needs to be met before. So this was a planet. Well, it wasn't a planet, it was a dwarf planet. So there's a bunch.

Is that still a planet? I think that's still a planet. It's just a small planet.

Well, it's a dwarf planet. Yes. Although I think the.

Do you have less privileges? If you're a dwarf player like, what's the?

I think they're politically correct. Term is little planet.

Little planets, but what is it? I I don't understand it. If you're a dwarf planet, do you get less rights than a regular planet or you just you're not included in like the the school wall chart? If you're a dwarf planner, do you just left off the chart? You're not important enough.

Well, no. OK, so.

What's I don't understand?

There is some criteria we'll get to it. Let's just talk about. Sedna itself. So Sedna was discovered by a guy called Michael Brown from Caltech. Another guy called Chad Trujillo from Gemini Observatory, and David Rabinowitz, from Yale, on the 14th of November 2003, right? Mm-hmm. In the following months, they were able to track and predict its orbit and determine that it was the widest known orbit. In the solar system, did you know Sedna takes 11,400 years to return to the same point around the Sun?

That's a long time to wait for.

They would have long winters. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Summer, summer. Wow. So it's further out than Pluto.

Yeah, it might be the planet that Game of Thrones was set on. So they nicknamed, said another Flying Dutchman, after the ghost ship, because it was really hard for them to find and it moved really slowly and they actually kind of lost track of it a couple of times and it's only it's only 1000 kilometres wide, which is like a dwarf planets tiny in comparison to other planets, right. Look, I could sit here and explain it.

Right.

OK.

Until the cows come home and it'd be, I think, marginally entertaining, but it might be more entertaining if we kinda listen to this rap.

Got a weird orbit. Was discovered by Michael Brown. 2003 was when the planet was found. The only thing redder than centres Mars and its distance from the sun is super far. We're talking 80 million miles. No other planet orbits and it goes around the sun and the. It takes 11,000 years just. To make one trip.

Yes.

They explained it better than you.

They really did, and it was a lot.

Why don't you just play? The song, instead of talking.

It was a lot groovier and it had some really cool 8 bit audio going on there, so you know, look, you can take both. There you go, you get the bonus, you get both explanations, the name.

What?

Hmm 40 by Nintendo. Centre. OK, tell us about names.

The name setter that they settled on is actually Sedna is the Inuit goddess of sea and marine animals. OK. And there's a few stories like cause, obviously, you know, a lot of these stories weren't written down about centre. So it's mythology. Like it depends on what part of the area where the Inuit inhabit and what group of Inuit go. Yeah.

Oh, there's different versions of Sedna.

But the the one that I think is probably the most popular and it's kind of there's lots of variants of this one is that she was a giant, Sedna was a giant. Hmm. Who could not stop eating, right. She could not stop eating and she would be so hungry that she would attack her parents. So. So I'm thinking that.

Angry.

Edna, you know, comes home from school and just stands in front of the cupboard, you know, looking in the cupboard.

Hmm.

Yeah, said Nicky. Go and do your homework. Stop looking in the cupboard. I'm hungry. You're not hungry. You're bored.

And all that's left is cheese and bacon. Balls. They're the worst.

Leave me alone. You don't know. Me attacks appearance. Yeah, yeah. There's nothing to eat in this house. There's plenty to eat. Said. Why don't you go outside and play for a little while till the street lights come on. And then do your homework. Dinner will be ready soon, OK?

Yep, Yep, I'd do the same. Except for cheese and bacon balls.

So her dad said his dad, her old man, is the creator God and gutta right, and he's had enough. He's like said no, I can't. I can't do this. I can't keep feeding you all the time. So it's like, jump jump on the kayak said, no, we're going out to sea. He takes sending out to sea and he's like, listen.

Yeah. MHM.

Isn't that your job? Isn't that?

I'm gonna throw you off the side. I'm throwing you off the side of the kayak. You're eating me out of house. Home. And you're Davy Jones's locker is the place where you're going. We're tossing you out to sea. You've been attacking your parents. Well, I mean, you know, it was a.

Ah.

Different time it. Was a different time. Sometimes they've just gotta do what they have to do to. Make ends meet. I don't know, I've said. I had any brothers or sisters. I sincerely hope not, because I think docs would be on the front door. Straight away, if they knew that dad was tossing her off the side of the kayak anyway, setting holds on.

Oh, it's got a good, good grip strength.

Sitting like that. No, I'm not going. No, I'm sure there's something in the. I'll just have some vital weeks. Just let me come back home. Exactly. I'll take the cheese and bacon ball like it's fine, you know, and I'll do my homework. He's like, Nah, cut the fingers off.

I like the cheese and bacon rolls.

She sinks to the bottom of the sea, becomes the ruler of the sea creatures and her severed fingers become the walrus and seals that the Inuit hunt.

Wow, good story. Wow. But then if? She was a giant. Why they naming the dwarf planet after a giant?

There's lots of questions. I mean, if she was. A giant how the?

I can accept all the other stuff, the fingers and the cheese and bacon balls, but why?

If she was a giant, how the how the did you get her in?

Why? Why?

A kayak. Like honestly, also a good point. Yes, there's a lot of holes in the sadness story. Lot of holes. Anyway, Sedna actually, the planet reignited this whole debate about what should or shouldn't be considered a planet. And amongst the astrological boffins, that's the Union. It's very controversial.

Yes, not the walrus hunter. The.

As to what makes and what doesn't make a plan. That, and at the time the media would jumping in and saying and you heard it in the song too, that a 10th planet was discovered. So this is what they say, a dwarf planet.

Is.

Due to its mysterious nature, Satna has always confused astronomers. Until now, Sedna is a dwarf planet by the International Astronomical Union IAU. It was officially classified as a dwarf planet in 2008, making it the third object recognised by the IAU. It is located beyond the orbit of Neptune and is believed to be part of the Kuiper Belt, a region of icy bodies beyond the orbit of Neptune. Yes, so?

What's before Pluto, then? It's beyond Neptune.

No, I'm not sure. No because it's the furthest out.

Well, then, wouldn't they say beyond Pluto, wouldn't they say, beyond Neptune?

Well.

But I'd still be on Neptune cause Pluto.

Ohh so you don't. We don't talk about Pluto anymore because it's dwarf planet. OK, so there's right. So that's the difference. If you're a dwarf planet, you don't.

We don't talk about Pluto because Pluto is also a dwarf planet. Yes, and and what happened to Sedna is exactly.

Get talked about. So even though sadness closest to Pluto, we say she's closest to Neptune because we just don't talk about that is so unfair. That's.

That's exactly what happened to Pluto in the 1990s, and there's also the huge debate about the fact that if Goofy's a dog, how is Pluto also a dog? And then everyone discovered that Goofy was a cow. No, he's a cow.

Terrible. Goofy's not a dog. He's a cow.

I. Goofy as a cow?

But they're not cow.

Aren't they?

Do cows have big droopy ears?

Like that easy cartoon, like who knows?

I just don't think he's anything I. Think he's just a prude?

OK, so so anyway, that happened to Pluto in the 90s as well. Pluto got classified as a dwarf planet for years in school, in school, we're always like 9 planets. Now, there's only eight. Pluto's not a planet. What? That's.

Maybe they should gang up. I thought that. Pluto, not a planet, was 2 thousandths. It was that 80s. Ohh, it's 90s.

No, it was in the 90s. It got downgraded in the 90s. Yeah. So the criteria there are three criteria.

Oh, OK.

It's it's in orbit around the sun. It has sufficient mass to assume hydrostatic equilibrium, like a nearly round shape, and it has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit. Now clearing the neighbourhood.

Oh, can you share?

Hmm.

Is basically where you wake up at 7:00 AM on a weekend and start mowing your lawns. No, it's not. It's it's. It means that it has the most dominant gravity, so there's no other bodies of comparable size other than like satellites or moons. Under its gravitational influence. So there are three criteria, and unfortunately Sedona and Pluto did not clear the neighbourhood, didn't clear the neighbourhood.

OK.

They didn't clear the neighbourhoods. So if they'd started up the whippersnapper different story.

Yeah, exactly. If they start up, if I started parking on the nature strip, you know. Yeah, playing loud music at all sorts of hours, you know, maybe didn't like neglected their dog so that they're barking all the time they might.

Yeah. Pressure washing, yeah.

Have picked. The neighbourhood pressure washing running the leaf blower exactly. These are the things that will clear neighbourhoods. These are the things that will upgrade you.

Putting rubbish in the bin Simon's bin.

From a dwarf planet and it's kind of interesting too, because if those kind of people are clearly clearing the neighbourhood, they clearly think that everything revolves around them rather than them being in orbit of anything else.

Yeah, OK, that's disappointing.

Anyway, let's go to. Let's go to the 19th of March. Let's. Well, this is a bad news story that has an OK outcome. Nobody was harmed. Well, except, well, some people were harmed.

Century.

19th. Hmm. 19th of March 2004 Taiwanese president. Chen Shu Bian is shot just before the country's presidential election on March 20.

Yeah, it's very inconvenient, like, cause all the ballot papers are printed out and everything, and then, you know, he's running for the election.

All the campaigning, all the money that they spent.

Exactly. They're although. Head shot. Careful. Do you just be a bit more sensitive, please? Ohh yes. Good. OK.

Ohh no like photos. I mean like glamour shots to put on there. How to vote.

Card shot the day before the.

Election too soon.

Who's seen? Hmm. So, President Chen, Vice President Liu, standing in the back seat of an open converter with Jeep.

Have we learned nothing?

I know, right? Like hello.

Come on.

Yeah, it always. It's happened before. It'll happen again. They're going slowly through a crowded St about 1:45 PM a bullet penetrates the windshield of the vehicle, grazes 10 stomach and was actually stopped by his clothes.

Oh dear.

On the eve of the 2004 presidential election, former President 10 Schreiben was shot while canvassing for boats in Tainan.

Are you gone?

That's all that was available.

Ohh, that's a compelling news. Grab isn't. It. So anyway.

What if was stopped? In his clothes, what was he wearing?

Well, it went through the windshield first. So it's like, I mean, the bullets gonna be losing a significant. Yeah, a duffel coat perhaps, you know.

OK, I must have been wearing a heavy jacket or something. Hmm, they've got big buttons that would stop bullet.

Possibly anyway, so well, it it grazed his stomach, stopped in his clothes like they said. He got a he. Had a flesh wound.

It was so he didn't die. No.

But it was he had 11 centimetre long gash in his stomach. That was, yeah, 11 centimetres long, 2 centimetres wide. It was significant. Like that would hurt it.

You think that would hurt? Yeah. Tomatoes. Yes. That about that big.

Yes. So the. The bullet penetrated the windshield. Just two shots and hit a cast on loose Knee vice president. Loose knee. Yeah.

Geez, they were monkey hit the duffel coat and hit the plaster cast.

The dudes, a rubbish shot. Clearly. Why are you going for the windshield if they're standing in the back of the convertible?

It's very.

And it's a. It's open, yeah.

So she's wearing the cast on her knee because she injured herself and the lawyer who was travelling with them was like, yeah, they were shots because at first they thought that they'd just been hit by firecracker. There's all this noise and fireworks going off. Yeah, and and. And how stupid is this, like, in Taiwanese political parades and rallies, they often set off fireworks. Now that's just, you know.

Ohh, like celebrating the election. That's yeah, alarming.

Well, it's a good way to mask shooting a candidate in order to win an election, isn't it? Anyway, they took him off to hospital. He Fast forward to about 5:45 PM at night. There's a whole bunch of events occur, but at 5:45 PM at night, they're like, yeah, he's got this wound right. He's got the gash on his abdomen at 6:00. 2 shells were found on the campaign route where the shooting took place, so they found the shells, which is, you know, they cleared the area. They found the shell and then chain actually showed his scars off, publicly published them in the media so, so so they could see what happened. He's like, yeah, so you got me, but you didn't.

Hmm.

Really get me so.

Wow.

Yeah. Then by 9:00 at. Right. So I, I mean, he's obviously got a good health plan because he's gone into emergency.

Hmm.

It's back up on on.

At around sort of. Yeah. Yeah. And he's back out by 9:00 at night. Now. I I don't know anyone in the public. System. That would experience that they'd still be there three days later, and then he releases a video to the public and he says, listen, just stay calm, everyone. I'm OK. The security of Taiwan is OK. Everything's OK. Go to the election. It's not gonna be postponed. We're still gonna all go to vote tomorrow. And he went and voted the next day.

Kept kept the election up. That was surely surely.

Yeah.

You would have had to win based on that.

Like I said. Political advertising. They printed all that campaign material like.

Maybe it was an inside job.

No. Well, it's interesting that you say that because now you're going down the road of conspiracy theories, right?

I would win. Well, you know, maybe they were aiming for. The button and the plaster cast.

Ohh really so it was just gonna look like he was attacked.

Maybe extra coverage and you know he's a hero and he survived better vote. I'd vote if that was me and I was going to vote the next day, I'd vote for the guy that got shot and survived.

In order to. Well, that's interesting, isn't it?

OK.

Me. Well, good on you, mate. You can have my vote.

Well, if he it's, it's the the thing that the fact that he survives meant that the election could go ahead if he had died, they would have suspended the election. It's the only time their law allows for the suspension of elections if candidate dies.

Hmm.

But China's opponent, Liane Chan, and his campaign manager, Wang Jin Ping, tried to visit Chen on the night of the incident, but they weren't allowed to see him because he was resting. He's like, Nah, can't say I've just been shot. Like, I don't want to talk to the opposition. I've just been shot. Interesting. Then, then the next day he goes out in public.

But I'll talk about.

He cast his vote and they're like, well, we're offended by that, you know, couldn't see us last night because he got shot. But he's out voting first thing in the morning. Ridiculous. Huge investigation. Huge investigation into the shooting. Lots of conspiracy theories.

That would be.

They had to get some American forensic scientists over because, you know, getting serious when you call the Americans in, you know, they're so good at finding weapons of mass destruction. Yeah. Yeah.

Yep, they'll solve this one.

Of course so. So the Interior Minister and the National Security Bureau director actually resigned because of this, because in the Taiwanese.

Wow.

Tradition is that officials have to take responsibility for the shooting, so sorry, that was our bad. Not because they did it. They didn't shoot.

Ohh cause they didn't that the shooting went. Ahead. They didn't stop it. Oh. No, but they weren't. They didn't prevent us from happening. Umm.

They were just like accepting responsibility for not preventing it. We didn't do our job. We were derelict in our duties. So they stepped down and then I think if you go right up to September, which we might talk about, if there's nothing else happening that week, it depends on how you know, strapped for consent we are September, it is.

Next.

Yeah.

September is usually a big month. I'm going to say we probably won't talk about this again, so come on, go for it now.

Yeah.

Maybe so they end up making three arrests in September and and then there's two suspects that they named in March, and their names were Cheng Yi suing and Huang, Huang Ren. And they were actually found.

MHM.

Dead shortly after the shooting, so they've kept a lid on it the entire time, and then they've come out like two years later, almost.

So they they were. Already dead when they named them.

Yes, yes, yes, that's right. So they, they had to piece together a bunch of evidence from tapes, from tracing the weapon back to its maker, they went straight to the weapon manufacturer and they found out all the different people that had owned the weapon and all. This stuff and Chen the the prime suspect, was found drowned in a harbour and Huang shot himself with a gun that was made by the same manufacturer and they reckoned that the bullet shared traits with the one that hit the vice president. Anyway, there was lots of things happening around this. They made a film about it as well. Did they? Yes, I think it did. Pretty well at the Taiwanese box office. You know, full political intrigue, presidential assassin out of water type story. Yes, it was wonderful. They concluded that Chen had actually acted alone in spite of the other guy shooting himself with the gun from the same manufacturer with.

Or were they murdered so that they wouldn't tell?

The bullet with settlement.

The truth.

These are the conspiracy theories, right? So they close the case when they say yeah, he acted alone. Case closed. No problem. Conspiracy theories come in thick and fast, ranging from people thinking that China. Was perhaps behind it to exert a little bit of control. Hmm. And then the other conspiracy theory, like you were saying, was that the actual politicians involved were using it to gain sympathy. So they were, like, staged the. The whole thing was staged for them to get sympathy and win.

Yeah, I reckon I'm going. Go with that.

The election now, there's a lot of doubt about that conclusion. They came to. There's way too much to go into here, like we can't. You could. Do you know what you should do if you're inspired by this story, go and set up your own thing podcast. Do it like a true crime thing. Exactly. True crime performs, really.

Hmm. To take God, yes, yes.

Well, this stuff not so much. Let this podcast be an example to you dudes in Camrys love us. If you want to do true crime, you get a bit more mass appeal. So you go for that.

True crime in Taiwan.

Mel, I've spent after the news. Honestly, I worked really hard on those two stories. And yeah, sorry.

I ruined the conspiracy theory. I didn't. Read that bit. I didn't know that was coming.

But I I feel like there might be a bit of a conspiracy against me, but.

Ohh, not at all, not at all.

Was the lone gunman on the grassy Knoll in the Camry?

No, would not be a Camry driver, that's for sure. #1 here in Australia on the charts this time 20 years ago. Ohh, we've jumped aboard the toxic train. It was #1 in the UK last week, but Toxic Britain Spears great great film.

OK. Hmm. Britney. Hmm. Toxic karaoke favourite like I.

Yes. And I feel like I've used. All my toxic. Facts go and listen to last week if you wanna.

Yeah.

Know them. Yeah. New number one in the UK, one that was performed on many a dance floor.

Clap, clap, clap, clap your hands. Alright, now we're gonna do the basic step to the left. Take it back now, y'all one hop this time. Right foot. Let's dump left foot. Let's dump Cha cha real smooth. Turn it down.

Cha slide.

Wow. Well, it's no Nutbush city limits. I have not done the chart. It sounded complicated and and and I reckon that's why it wasn't a hit at weddings. You know, there's no chick.

We haven't done the Charter slides. No, it's.

Dance. It's no Nutbush city limits. It's no bus stop.

And there's usually only a select group of people when. It comes on that do do. The Cha cha slide because not many people.

Right.

Are familiar with it.

So it's a bit of an elitist thing.

Yeah. Well, if you did know it, you would feel pretty good about yourself. I don't know it, but I remember the song. But the song was originally, I think it came out in the 90s. So it's DJ. Casper, we should say.

Casper the friendly ghost.

Well, he was called DJ Casper because he used to always wear white on stage.

Ohh OK.

Says, well, Casper as in a ghost. Yes.

How?

Did you know? In rap music like, well, more R&B? Slash wrap Casper is a term for ghosting someone.

Like following someone Ohh leaving leaving.

So no ghosting like we're out. So. So there's a Jodeci song and they're like, something something now we Casper instead of now we're out. We're ghost, we're gone. Disappeared. So you know, they're on to that before ghosting became a.

Ohh now we are right, yeah. Hmm, that's obscure. That's very obscure. Now we, Casper, like it's almost like rhyming slang like.

Thing. Anyway, fun fact. Now we have. Now we have DJ Casper back to him. He created the song for his nephew in the 90s and his nephew worked as a personal trainer at Bally. Total fitness. Bally, remember Bally.

Right.

Hmm.

No.

Bally was a big there's.

Wasn't I?

A casino as well, isn't there?

Maybe I'm not a big fitness guy like so.

Bellies.

It was a big it was a big fitness chain.

I'm a more of a fitness guy these days.

It's probably like your 90s version of Anytime fitness.

Really. So you got a little like tag and you could swipe in.

Well, he was a personal trainer and he's like, I need something. I need something different to set me apart as a good personal trainer so I can have more people at my class and make.

Like a 24 hour gym.

More money and so DJ Casper said. OK, sure, nephew. And he created the.

Right.

Cha.

The Cha cha slide. So it's an aerobic thing.

It was. It was done as an aerobic thing. It became really popular and people started doing it at school, became a thing in PE like Health Hustle, you do the Cha cha slide just after you do wake me up.

Did the the. Site. Before you go go, so how long did you have to sustain a cha cha slide for? Is this like? A 30 minute thing can't.

It's kind of, you know it if you saw it, they kind of slide you. Know. They like they, they do like a slide and they.

Yeah. Then I do the Cha CHA theme.

Do a flap slide.

OK.

Right. Anyway, I I can't say I don't think.

It's not the mice. It's not as good. It's no, you're right. It's no nutbush. It's no macarena.

I don't think I'd be a I do not think I'd be able to spot it out in the wild, to be honest with you, Mel, I don't think I could spot a I don't like. I could spot a nut Bush, spot a Macarena, spot a bus stop, spot a bus stop, can spot a chicken dance.

Wow, OK. Like this thought and not push miles away. Tudor. Yeah. We had a dance to the train. Come and ride the train and ride.

Don't think.

It, but I think we made that up and I think it was like a.

Ohh, the locomotion. I could spot a locomotion. There is no freaking way. I could spot a cha cha.

You spot a. What's the what's that one?

Slide out in the wild.

That's chicken dance, isn't it? Sorry, I don't know some dance, but not the chacha side. So it became popular in the 90s.

What are you doing? Thought you were having a seizure then?

I was but. Then it got so popular that DJ cast was like, oh, I'm on to something. And then in early 2000s, he creates the Cha cha slide. Casper Slide Part 2, which is that there's got a bit more of a Dancy beat underneath it, and it was played at a radio station.

Run. Uh-huh.

And then it. Became a really big hit in Chicago.

Well, that's how songs usually become hits Mel. They play them at radio stations and then everyone has a listen and they go ohh this.

In Chicago. Yes. That's good and do that and pay.

Might be goods, yeah. Uh-huh.

And then I think his record label, they wanted to create an album Move Chicago based artists. So he was on that and then it became popular again and then everyone was doing it not in PE but on the dance. So I'm thinking it's the kids that did it in pee, got a bit older and went to the disco.

Right.

And then brought it to the disco.

Yeah. Do you ever go to the carnies at Batemans Bay? I don't know about Cha Cha slow, but you see the Cha Cha Chanda.

Yes.

You'd have a couple of beers you'd binge drink in the park, and then you'd go to the Batemans bake parties.

My sister, would my sister would always. Well, she wasn't binge drinking. She had a sensitive stomach. She'd always either throw up on the char char or the wipe out. Remember the.

Ah.

Wipeouts yeah.

Yes.

That was horrible. With the hydraulics and it was going and then you'd go down the hill and then you'd spin around. It's like a teacup.

Yeah, they're really dangerous. Yeah. And then you get off and you turn around and you look back at the ride and you realise.

There's always parts on the grounds and you're like.

Maybe.

You guys, I think you forgot to put some things in there.

There'd be parts on the ground and one of the legs would be propped up with a paver or a house. Brick. Yeah, yeah.

That is so true, like you worry when you go on rides, it's say you know a theme park. No, it's the carnies. You've gotta worry about setting those things up in half a day. Parts lying on the ground.

Yeah. I know especially Cha Cha, they swing around.

Lot.

Yeah, it is a. It is a.

Yes.

Bit of a risk.

Yeah, yeah. And the other char char slide that you do is if you're on the char char, yes. And you were sitting on the inside, the centrifugal force would.

Oh, the inside did slide. You never sit next to a stranger on that so awkward. Yeah. Yeah. And you?

Wish you against the other person on the char char and you'd be mashed up against the thing. It's like I'm sorry I can't. It's the centrifugal force. It's physics. It's the orbit that we're in. Yes, it's the orbit. It's like Sedna. I mean, if you're sitting next to Sydney, you'd be destroyed.

Just be like. I'm sorry. So sorry.

Yeah, can't help it. Can't help it. Centrifugal motion.

Hmm.

But sadly, sadly, DJ Casper passed away last year of kidney and liver cancer. August, August last year, at the age of 58, was had four cancer on and off a lot over the years and was thought to be in remission. But yeah, unfortunately he came back so.

Really.

Oh, that's terrible. Uh-huh. Wow. Well, that really touched a black cloud over that didn't. His legacy is the Cha Cha slide. The dance that I could not spot out in the wild. I feel terrible now. I feel like I need to.

Sadness.

Sorry.

Good dance. Well, maybe you should learn.

Well, maybe I should seek it. I should learn it. I'm not learning it. I don't. I don't dance. I do not dance.

You should let it. To the left. Know well, maybe. Maybe now's your time.

If you can't dance, you can't do nothing for me, baby.

That's a spice.

Skill. Song. That's right.

How did you?

Know that I know everything. I just don't know the.

Cha cha slide.

That's impressive. OK, let's go to the US. Let's listen to the top five over there, please.

Probably a good idea.

Everybody.

Luther Vandross.

This.

Party.

Wood, wood. Yeah.

Yeah, usher, it's just like concrete. In at that number one position, he's not going anywhere right now.

No, I don't think he does for a while. And I think when he does move out of #1 with that one of his.

Is that right?

Other songs goes into #1.

Oh, he pushes himself out of the charts. Oh, that's odd. Sounds weird. Anyway, who else we got?

Yeah, I think so from memory. There Chingy still one call away #2A little Anita in at #3 slow jams. I swear to God.

Yes, yes. It's elita. It's aliyah. It's not Alita, it's aliyah.

It's there's a definite.

There's no tea. Leah Leah.

A little Anita Italia. There's a turf you need to listen. Next time you will hear it.

Really set this party up that. I've listened to that song way too. I haven't listened to that song full actually, I've only I've only listened to that portion. I'm very familiar. I'm I'm. I'm trying not to. What else?

In your heads, in your heads rent free. You wouldn't know what the rest of the. Song is. Melody, tipsy, everybody in the club getting tipsy has moved up and split.

Tipsy, was it jakwan jakwan?

Jakwan yes, $15118 on cameo if you'd like jaquan to give you a. Tip or a shout? Out $8 if you just wanna message him. I think I will message him please.

What can we?

What can we say to Jake Vaughn? What would be a nice what would be a good thing to say for $8? What would you say to him?

Like there's so much. Do you know there's.

Back off.

No, you can't say anything offensive. You get blocked.

Can I have my? Can I have?

You get blocked.

My $8 back.

To which he would say.

No. Yeah. He's gonna take it to the club and get tipsy. I just find that absurd. I find that completely absurd. Paying $8 to the message to a celebrity that they're not even gonna read. He's gonna read it.

Yeah. Vodka cruiser for $8. Send a. I'm gonna think of something, and I'm gonna send it to. I'm gonna. Think of. Something good. OK.

Alright, as a little experiment I will give you $8.

Hmm.

Yeah, I've just got to.

And we will see what comes out of this and we need to revisit this next episode. So you just go, I reckon, all you need to say is jakwan. I hear it's $8 to message you. I just wanna see what happens after I send it.

Think of. You're saying? OK.

Please let me.

Know that's good.

Right, good.

What do I get for sending a message jaquon?

Maybe that you might we need. To check the but. Before you brainstorm too hard, I think we need to check the character limit cause what if it's you've got 10 words you've you've used them up already.

What do I get for an $8 message? I don't know if that's 10 worth, but something like that. What do I get for an 8?

Yeah, let's do.

Dollar message. Send that to him.

It.

That's worth $8, although it's US, it's probably gonna be about 15.

Yeah.

Ohh Christ, we can afford it.

It's fine. No, we cannot. The cost of living crisis is in full effect right now.

Cost of that extra $7.00. You're gonna break it.

Yeah. Last week I was trying to tenderise meat with bicarb soda. I nearly killed us and we can afford to send a message to Jake Phone.

We don't have any money we don't have. Any money for one. I think we can. I think it's worth it. We'll do it. We'll see what happens and we'll we'll report back next next week.

OK, sure. Alright. So what? OK, that's number four. Well, it's #5.

Never.

We've got a new entry and I was a little bit. We put this in after the stance we took last time.

Yeah, I know I used. To I used to take moral high ground. I don't care anymore.

But I think, well, I think no one else cares. None of the listeners cared. They just like, well, why don't you play it? It's.

No.

Point in time stop.

We separate the music from the person. Yeah, OK.

Don't be idiots. So we. Played it hotel well, it's actually by someone. Called Cassidy, but it features.

Cassin.

Someone said, isn't.

Yeah, that's I. I was repeating you. No, I was. I was like being I was like being you're a hype guy. I was like what? OK, Cassidy, like you like you like to the window to the wall. And I'm like, I'm like to the wall.

Ohh I thought you were correcting me. Ohh. Yes. I thought I might have said Cassity or something like a little Anita thought I said Cassity and you were correcting me.

Cassidy corrected me.

Cassidy, it's Cassidy, feet R Kelly. But when you know the song, the chorus that we played in that top five, that's the R Kelly bit. But that's we play the chorus in the top five. So we had to play the R Kelly bit cause that's probably the bit that people know.

R Kelly. That's the R Kelly bee. Sorry.

Yes.

But it's Cassidy's song it's a late single from his debut album split Personality. Here we go again with these inappropriate, inappropriate, inappropriate.

OK.

Thank you for supporting me. That was very good hyping. Thank you. Appreciate that split personality feeling a little bit justice for JC.

Well done. Thanks. It's at least I guess it. Yes. Yeah. Yeah, the the they got the whole mental health thing. Yeah. It just doesn't stand up in this day and age. I get it. It's like it's, you know, it's like that TV show last week as well. You.

I think you do that. Yeah. Not not appropriate, Cathy. Rachel's.

Know it just doesn't.

Yeah, there's so many things. I I can't believe. Only 20 years ago we thought these things were all OK and none of us really went.
