The year is 2004. Your polyphonic ringtone habit is sending you broke. George W Bush is sworn in for a second term, and in spite of everything going on, the most controversial thing is a wardrobe malfunction at the Super Bowl. T -, 20 rewind 20 years with Joe and Mel.

Week. 8th August 2004.

20 minus.

The rest is history. You know what?

I'm very forgetful 20. Hello there.

Stop trying to make fetch happen.

If I. When we're waiting for.

This is harder than I thought it would be.

My fellow Americans.

Let's roll.

You know for no good reason. When somebody says to me, we're gonna go back in time 20 years, my brain automatically just defaults to the 1980s, which is not the case 20 years in the past is the early 2000s, and this is what this podcast is all about. We like to call it T. Bonus 20 we're gonna take you back to a time where your biggest worry was trying to pick the perfect ringtone and keep your Tamagotchi alive with your host. Joe and Mel. Hello, Mel.

Hello. Wasn't that the worst? The polyphonic version of your favourite song?

Yes.

Or chopping up your own song to add to your ringtone. That came a little bit later. That was later in the the 2000s was editing up your own song for the ringtone. It's difficult.

Yes, well, and if you buried your Tamagotchi in the backyard, there was no danger of the dog. Digging that one. Back up as opposed to the battery gas. So that was a good thing. Lots of stuff happening this week. What are we up to?

8 to 14 August 2000.

And 410 warnings now extended to Swanee.

Hurricane.

River, we will. Be dealing with this storm tomorrow. It is inevitable.

Yes, big hurricanes in the US it is hurricane season and back in 2004 there was one called Charlie. It was an absolute.

Easy. Look back and I just. Heard. The worst screams I've ever heard in my life.

I was wearing a white dress that.

Day I remember. Specifically, it could have been me it.

Was just body fluids. All of them everywhere. What is?

Oh.

Ohh no. And then just pandemonium.

I actually have a disorder that causes me to pass out anytime I'm around around poo.

That's his.

I love this story. This is this is one of my. Favourites.

One of the most disgusting, the most disgusting stories.

I'm afraid it is. It is fabulous.

Well, it is such a good story.

One of the most disgusting stories in the history of of music, and definitely one for the dinner table. So stick around for that so that you can retell it.

To your friends thought just in front. Heck, it's closing. Can thought win again. Hasn't lost for six years. Heck, it's very close. Really close, close. Sing.

Packet is closing on Thorpe this time 20 years ago as the Athens Olympics, it was week one of the Athens Olympics, this time 20 years ago. But I think it's like week two of the Olympics here. So we'll we'll go back to what was happening in Athens. That was a a big good time and we had a really close connection.

Ohh yeah sorry.

Yeah, I I had a really close connection to those Olympic Games cause I knew someone who was over there and it was it. It wasn't the most pleasant of stories. I'd I'd hate to. I'll tell you more about it a little bit later on. But of course, you know, with the sport comes all the big endorsements.

Hmm.

Yeah, that's right.

You know, you've got athletes who have been training for the last four years in the hope of winning a gold medal so that they can get their face on a cereal box.

Yes.

What athletes does the ultimate endorsement? The they.

Yes.

Influences early 2000s.

I I mean, you know, if I if I was looking for a good quality breakfast cereal, I obviously needed someone in an Olympic uniform. Yeah, yes.

Ohh torpedo. Sophie, if. If.

Thorpe is on the box.

Yes, definitely. That's my breakfast.

Either that or or someone who'd participated in an Iron Man competition. Do you know what I mean? Yeah, you. You're picking up what? I'm putting down those endorsements. That's changed a lot. These.

Ohh yes, definitely Iron Man foods.

Right.

So changed and now it's all about the social media influencer becoming the brand. And I've had this really odd thing happen recently where we talked about rocking this where you carry the weight on your back, right?

Ohh yeah, so, so well we we talked about it a while ago, but if you if you're just joining us rocking is this great fitness trend.

Yes.

Where you carry a backpack full of really heavy stuff and go on a long walk. Yeah. And it's it's it's it's the beauty is in the simplicity of it. Right and and and the more you do it, the better you get at it. And then the better walking every day without a backpack full of heavy stuff becomes you feel like you're floating. Feels wonderful.

Yeah.

It's fantastic. I love it. Feels nice, doesn't. It.

Ohh this is so easy now.

Walking on air the entire time.

So I started that last year and then I was looking for the equipment. So I started following a few people that did rocking on Instagram.

Yeah, yeah.

And I went down this wormhole, so I've I've followed this one person. Who who did a lot of rucking and had some. Really. Good tips. Turns out they also work for a company that makes supplements like you know your protein powders, your pre workouts, all of that.

Ohh yeah, all of that gym junkie stuff.

Kind of stuff.

And they're a cross fitter and amazing and so started getting served up a lot of. Content related to. That.

Yes.

And then I started following some other middle aged women who were doing weight lifting cause I'm getting into more doing weights now that I'm getting older, building up the muscle tone. And so I started following a handful of women that are doing similar things.

M.

And they're all taking this protein that, this Rucker, that I started following. So I've gone down this protein worm hole and I've somehow become this follower of all these people that are using this protein.

Rise. Does this? Is this going to feed into the poo story a little bit later on with all this protein, you're.

Consuming no no. But yes, the protein is an interesting supplement. What's to say that? So anyway, yeah, it it's just amazing that I've just become. I've I've. I've basically become influenced. Everywhere I'm looking, all these people that I'm following for these different fitness reasons are all using this same protein powder.

Hmm.

But you were. You were admiring them from afar, and you're looking at their physique and you're going well. That's that. I I wanna look like that or I wanna achieve something similar to that. So anything that they kind of recommend or put forward I'm interested in hence the influencer thing.

Yes, I am so easily influenced. I am just an influencer's dream, but I just keep seeing this protein everywhere so I thought, well, maybe I'll try it, but you can't get it here in Australia. So I reached out to the customer service to see if I could get.

Yes. Right.

Sent here and their customer service is.

Right.

Yes, I've been going back and forth with this wonderful person called Ricky and Ricky. Is so helpful.

So I saw I saw a pop up on your phone. I was like, who's Ricky? Yeah.

Who's? Ricky is like my protein influencer.

Is is your? Is your protein dealer.

Ricky's proud of me because Ricky was asking me, like what?

Hey, hey, hey, hey. You got any protein? Yeah, yeah, I know a guy. I know a guy. Let me just let me just.

Are my goals and. No. Hook you up with Ricky. I'm telling Ricky about my goals and Ricky's like, wow, you seem to know a lot. Not a lot of people know about the things that you're you're telling me here, so. I felt special. I felt knowledgeable.

I watch your videos, Ricky. I consume your.

I found Ricky on the socials. Yes.

Your. Yeah. So you stalked him? Hmm. Hmm. Who is this? Ricky and.

Yes, I did cause I thought well, Ricky, Ricky has these credentials in his signature block and I wanted to see. If they were legit.

And I'm open to being influenced, so let's see if I can add Ricky to the.

Yes, I'm very easy.

But here.

Here lies the conundrum. So these days, when you buy something a products, particularly on the socials that you've been influenced into.

Hmm.

Hmm.

Hmm.

You, the people behind the product, are effectively the brands, right? So it's not just I'm going into Franklins and I'm buying no frills because it's cheap and I don't care where it was made and what's in it or anything like that. It's.

Yes, yes. Yes.

Just cheap and I'm going to eat it and that's great. End of story.

Right. And and no frills has no affiliations either. So instead of no frills maybe these days there should be some kind of plain label influencer called no affiliations.

My friends, my friends.

That would be good because the the problem I have now is that I've come so far on this being influenced journey and I'm at point of sale. I'm I'm putting it in the checkouts.

Would wouldn't it?

Hmm.

And then I thought, ohh I've only ever sort of researched this through the socials and through the influencers. Maybe I should do.

Hmm.

A bit of a Google.

You've been focused on the product, not the person behind the product.

I should do. Yeah. Well, the influences are kind of behind the product, but I should do a bit of cross checking. I should do some trust piloting and I should see what it is out there and I should read the reviews from from the common man.

Yeah. Right. Yes, cause I mean, heaven forbid Ricky is a flat earther or something like that, right?

Herein lies my problem.

Oh.

So it turns out Ricky's fine. Ricky's great, no problems.

Ohh.

Ricky's alright. OK, go Ricky. Yep.

I've got no issues with. Go.

Ricky for sure. But it turns out that other people behind this company fairly high up have some pretty strong views that don't necessarily align with my views.

Your views or your values, OK yeah.

All my values and so herein lies the problem with purchasing these days, because you do find out about the people behind the brands.

Right.

And then you see their socials and you watch some videos and you get a feel for who they are and what they stand for. No frills. I have no idea who's who's behind it, and I don't care. But now do I have to care? Why can I? Can I purchase this product in good faith knowing that the boss of this company's values?

Uh-huh. Who or what their values are, or what their values are?

Hmm.

Don't align with mine.

Well. Ohh. I mean yes, the product is still the product, it doesn't. It doesn't matter.

Oh.

What do you do here? And it seems to be a very good product. But now knowing what I know.

Hmm, I don't know if I can.

Buy the products.

Really, I don't. Well.

Right, no, this is my conundrum.

OK. OK, look at this. OK, think about like religion, cause that divides everyone that causes the whole world to tear itself apart. I'm a massive Prince fan. Prince is a Jehovah's witness.

Ohh true true.

Yeah, he's a door knocker, but I I I like his music. I listen. I'm not worried.

Yes.

Prince is a door knocker that hands out copies of Watchtower or was a door knocker in his spare time, much like, you know, because I I really like his music, but then that goes back to the conversation that we had about R Kelly and not playing the remix to ignition because R Kelly is a, you know, an abuser separating the music.

Yes.

Well, exactly. Yeah, well, OK, so.

And the artist, can you separate the products from the influencer?

From yes, and this is exactly my conundrum. So you know the boss of the company. It's not a it's not a religious thing. But there's some really strong. Views that don't necessarily align with my views. So now I don't know what to do. I don't know if I can hand my credit card details. Over to Ricky. But he's been so helpful and those influences have been influencing and I just I just.

I think I think it, I think it depends. I think it depends on what what you you you're buying like what the product is in relation to what the influence of lease for example if there was an influx.

Don't know what to do.

To the views.

User that was pushing an A particular airline or travel company and they were a flat Earther. There's no way I'm buying tickets on that plane. It's like it's we're gonna fly all the way to the edge of the world, and then what's gonna happen? I we're gonna fall off, you know, like, it depends on what they believe in. But, you know, if someone wins a gold medal in the Olympics and. They're they're gonna become an advocate for a complete breakfast and good fibre. Then I'm down with that.

Sold.

Do you? Do you remember that? Did I tell this story before? Remember, we back in the day 20 years ago. We were we were interviewing.

Are stones of manhood.

Yeah, it was.

We were talking about the strongman competition at Bundanoon and there was an Olympic weightlifter that was young there and I can't, I cannot remember his name, but he ended up doing the.

Yes.

It doesn't matter if we've told it or not. It's a fantastic story.

9.

Match on a. It was either the ****** or the clean and jerk on a box of wheat Bix. His photo was on the the box of wheat bits.

It was him carrying was. No, wasn't he carrying the stones of manhood or something?

No, he was he was holding the barbell above his head. Massive heavy Barber.

He was holding something heavy, yes.

Lifting weights and and he, he confessed. He said. You know that picture on the the box of weak pics and I'm like well yeah. And he goes well, you know, sometimes when you lift weights and they're really heavy, things happen. And I'm like Ohh really he goes. I'm hitting my pants in that photo on the box of wheat Bix. And if that isn't part of a complete breakfast. I don't know what it is. It's probably best that I don't remember that guy's name. Actually, just in case he doesn't want that, I mean, he told us the story anyway, you know, and we were radio announcers at the time. So what? What? What do you expect anyway? Hatch match dispatch clue. A celebrity having a birthday they're having their. Is it their 40th or their 41st? Let me. Let me get some.

He did. He did.

Clarity on that soon. But they said this.

Mate, you can spin all the bull you like. It's not gonna make any difference. Truth is, I don't trust you. I'm not gonna ohh. So leave me alone.

Wow, one more time.

Thank you.

You can spin all the bull you like. It's not gonna make any difference. Truth is, I don't trust you. I'm not gonna. So leave me alone.

I'm telling you, that's not that 41st birthday. Great. Thank you very much for that. We'll find out who that.

I I think it's 41st birthday actually. Yes.

Is at the end of the show.

We will start with the 13th of August 2004 and we had Hurricane Charlie, which was a Category 4 storm.

OK, fair enough.

It strikes Punta Gorda in Florida and devastates the surrounding area. It was a Category 4 hurricane, and at its peak it had sustained winds of 150 mph or 240 kilometres per hour, and it was a really notable hurricane because it. It intensified really rapidly and it changed direction quite unexpectedly, which caught many residents and authorities off guard.

Hmm. Yes. And Dennis from ABC Action News, Dennis, the weather guy, he was all over it.

Hurricane warnings now extended to Swanee River. We will be dealing with this storm tomorrow. It is. The ball and as the storm continues to lift back into the warmer waters of the Gulf, we will likely see another re intensification process by early morning and it could very well continue for about 6 to 10 hours tomorrow before we begin to feel the effects here in the Bay Area. So my advice to you, listen up and believe it this time there's been a lot of times we've had near misses. With George, with a lot of other storms, this one is the real deal. And by tomorrow morning, if you haven't evacuated and you are in an evacuation zone. And find somebody to buddy up with, away from the beach and out of that flood zone because we could be looking at something we have not seen ever in the Tampa Bay area. Harsh words, almost dramatic words. Well, when you see what we're looking at tomorrow night, you know what we're talking about. We'll have some information coming up in a couple of minutes, guys.

Due diligence due diligence there from Dennis the Weatherman at ABC Action News over there in Florida.

Oh.

Thank you. I'd take that seriously if I was watching that broadcast, I'd be like, OK, Dennis said I'm out.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well. So the hurricane formed on the 9th of August and originated in in the Caribbean Sea, and then it affected Jamaica and Cuba and the Cayman Islands, and then it moved into the Gulf of Mexico before it made landfall in Florida. Twitter and it hit Cuba on about the 13th of August as a category three hurricane which wreaked havoc there. Lots of damage there, but on the 13th is when it made landfall in Florida and.

Hmm.

It caused widespread devastation. I've looked at some of the footage and it is frightening. You see bits of tin roof just flying down the street trees, power lines crashing down, cars, windows being blown out, cars upside down like it. Was full on it. Affected areas like Port Charlotte, Acadia Orlando and then moved out into the Atlantic Ocean. It caused severe damage, particularly in Charlotte County and surrounding areas and the high winds and storm surge resulted in extensive property damage, infrastructure destruction and power outages.

The scariest thing I think, and I've never been in a cyclone or a hurricane or anything like that, and I've I know I've got friends who've been up in the tropics when they've hit and stuff like that like.

Hmm.

Canes but the scariest thing I think would be night time. Like during the day, you know there's a little bit of visibility, maybe maybe night time with just that wind howling at, you know, hundreds of kilometres an hour buffeting your house.

Yeah, yeah. Yeah.

That would be terrifying. I can't think of anything scary, and for it to go on for as long as it does would be even. So thousands. Of homes and businesses were destroyed or severely damaged from Hurricane Charlie in Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte, whole neighbourhoods completely levelled and I think the damage bill was about $16.3 billion US, US, which made it one of the costliest hurricanes.

Well.

In U.S. history at that time, I should say we know there's some bigger hurricanes coming, which we'll talk about in future.

Hmm.

Episodes, but that was responsible for, I think, 15 direct fatalities in the United States, hundreds of injuries due to flying debris, collapse structures and all those other storm related incidents that you would come across when you've got wind blowing really fast.

It was significant, comparatively, at the time it was a category four, we had a few category fives early 2000s with Isabelle in 2003, which we spoke about, Ivan, which is later on 2004 and obviously Katrina in 2005.

Yes.

The damage was very high for Charlie, but comparatively out of all the sort of category threes, fours and fives at the time, this one had the least amount of casualties, probably thanks to Dennis, I'm thinking.

Yes. Well, I think Dennis did a great service.

Dennis scared it out of everybody, and they all moved away somewhere safe. Thank you, Dennis.

That's right, not all heroes wear capes. Some of them stand in front of a green screen and do the weather. And Dennis did a great.

Yes.

Job. What I'm surprised about with this particular hurricane is there wasn't more casualties. Especially when you throw storm chasers into the mix. So the movie Twister had been out at this stage for quite a few years and it was a trendy thing to go into. And these guys are rampaging quits. They just ohh look. Then I I get it. OK. The sense of adventure. It's very exciting to go and chase hurricanes.

Ohh my gosh. Yes. Ohh, you are stay Oh my goodness.

But they are they. I don't know that they're fearless. I think they get quite scared, but they just get a massive thrill out of driving.

I think it's the adrenaline. Yeah. And then.

Into the middle of these things.

Afterwards, they're always. Going ohh that wasn't the best touching you.

I nearly died, and here's a montage of the storm chasers that were involved in Hurricane Charlie. I call him the Charlie Chasers, and it's not the kind of Charlie that you should be chasing. Don't. Don't chase Charlie kids say.

No to drugs. Look. Do you see the sheet metal to see your side. They all piece of sheet metal and flying right by us. We were pinned up against the. Water and he saw us. We couldn't.

Oh.

Chris, we're in the eye. There's the.

It might be sites like not.

Yeah.

Start to start up a bit down the street.

Get out of the street.

What?

Straight.

Right.

Get out of there.

Jimmy's hurricane chaser. His car took a beating, but he's alive.

Well.

Hey, I am lucky to be alive because I got in a little alleyway there and the wind started clocking around and things started going buying. I'm going this is great video man. They're going to love to see.

Ah.

This thing. Right in front of me. I'm like, this ain't too cool. This is right in front of me.

That card.

That's why there was a little wall. It was really hard and a. Little wall and then.

It was just.

Chris's car was going.

Ohh my Jeep was doing that too heavy.

I thought that was.

These guys get me through this and I'll never chase another hurricane.

Shareholders.

You know what? I knew we'd all be coming out just fine because we're all together and.

That was cat 4IN.

The belt is CAT4 under the belt. Listen to the excitement, it's.

Nuts. At least no one got sucked.

Out of a ditch this time.

I think their brains have been sucked out of their heads. It's insane. I love it. I mean, I don't know. I guess you could get swept up quite literally in in the excitement of the entire thing, but.

Yeah.

Ohh, but that guys car, the guy that was saying that he'd never do it again. You should have seen his car. I don't know how he survives. All the windows were blown out. Yeah, and it was all smashed in and he just he had to drive it in between two buildings just to take cover because of the crap that was blowing down the street and.

Yes. What did it look like?

And you've obviously got the water there coming up over the road and. It was just.

It's no joke. I saw a photo when I was doing a bit of research for this online of and it was a photo of a hurricane. I'm not sure which one and they were like, see the lights in the middle of the the storm and it's like, right up off the ground. No, they were like, see the light the. They're the headlights of a car. So they lifted a car off the ground. It was spinning around in it.

Frightening.

Yeah, it generates a time storm. Yeah, yeah.

Ohh.

Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh.

Like and whether or not that's true or not, I don't know. I've seen Twister with the cow going past, you know, wow. Alright, it's time for sport and there was so much going on in sport this time 20 years ago. Of course, we're in week two of the Olympics now in 2024, but. Only in week one of the Olympics, way back in 2004 in Athens, Greece, the Olympics had come home to Athens, Greece, mate.

Yeah, the 13th of August was the big opening ceremony. This is the 28th Olympic Games. It was based around the theme of history, culture and the spirit of. Games aiming to showcase Greece's rich history, particularly the ancient heritage, but also celebrating the modern Olympic spirit.

It was a big deal. Ohh, how do you think it compared to do? What do you first of all?

Hmm.

What did you think of the opening ceremony for the Paris Olympics this year?

I loved it.

Not going into an arena, but actually going except for the.

I loved it. I thought that.

It piercing down rains.

Was that was? Yeah, that was such a shame. But I loved the way they sort of broke up the countries as well, cause I find that boring. I find that part of the ceremony. Here we go. Here's the next one. And like everyone, of course, was outraged cause Australia didn't come out with the A's.

Yeah. Yes. Watching them all walk in, I know.

Oh.

Well the but.

That's the protocol. So yeah, they all overreacted because like the host nation. And we're gonna do it in 20-30 something in Brisbane, but yeah.

But everyone forgot the protocol, so we all cracked the sheets. But I love I love the way they broke that up and they they showcased the whole city and the whole city then became the backdrop of the opening ceremony and on the bow.

The. It was wonderful, wasn't it?

Roots and then how they had the different performances in the different areas. And so it wasn't in the stadium. So anyone I'm assuming could just sort of come and perch themselves at one of the main points.

Aaron.

And they have the the the parkour guy. It looked like like Assassin's Creed running across the rooftops, and then they had.

And watch and.

Yeah. Yes.

But just the diversity of the performances as well, it was just ohh my goodness. There's so much going on. I was exhausted. Yeah, yeah, I know what your favourite was, yes.

Oh my God. CΓ©line Dion closing at Lady Gaga, opening it and I think. The highlight for me was the French heavy metal band Gojira doing the Marie Antoinette bit and.

Amazing.

Yeah.

That, that whole, that whole segment just gave me chills and and like we've seen that band play at the UNI of NSW Roundhouse when you were like 8 months pregnant with our son and we saw them play live there in a very intimate surrounding. So but to see those guys be the first metal band at an Olympic.

Was amazing.

Yes. Yeah.

And that was fabulous, man.

Yes.

Opening ceremony and a French metal band as well called Guajiro. You sound exactly the way their name suggests. Like a giant monster destroying a city.

But.

With the opera singer as well the spectacular and look and it was edgy too. I loved the edginess of it. So there was, yeah, there was the threesome. Explain that to the kids. Well, listen.

With an opera singer. Ohh, it was so good and look. They pushed the boundaries, didn't they?

Hmm.

What else? Marie Antoinette, with a head cut off and then the fire and blood. And.

Yeah, that that was probably a little. Bit having to explain that to to children watching.

Well, the French, the revolution, I mean, there's a lot. There's a big cultural and artistic history of that country. So. And I think they just they they did it perfectly.

And the way they acknowledged the Notre Dame.

Yes, the cars are under skills.

Being being under construction and they they did a bit of a nod to the people. That were reconstructing.

I thought that was.

Us, that's lovely.

Beautiful. Beautiful. Anyway, I thought it was great. Athens, I think, was also quite great, especially because at the opening ceremony, they had Bjork Burke performed her song Oceania there.

Yeah.

Sweat. I am I.

And I think it's great that she cause that song was written especially for the event. Yes. And it like the line is like, your sweat is salty. And I think, you know, maybe there was a deodorant endorsement that kind that they missed there because that's the other thing, like when we're talking about Olympics. Yeah. Endorsements like. You know athletes, Sam Kerr from the Matildas Rexona is it rexona? I think she's rexona. She's some kind of deodorant. I might have had the wrong one. Yeah, I think given given the level of activity, it might be. I'm not sure. Anyway, with Burke, do you remember she had the dress? Yes. That went over the entire stadium.

Oh, is she? Is she? Is she clinical strength or just regular? You'd wanna be clinical strengths. Yeah, 24 hour protection. I think it kind of didn't it sort of fold out throughout the performance and then it ended up being a map of.

Yes.

The world beautiful.

Yes, it was quite a stunning. And I I think with these opening ceremonies, it must be very stressful for the organ. Risers to to choreograph and create like you know, remember.

Yes.

And come up with something different. Imagine the brainstorm after. Imagine the brainstorm for the next Olympics going right, guys. We've gotta outdo parents. How are we gonna? How are we gonna?

Yeah. Well, you've got to remember, Athens had to outdo.

Outdo those.

Sydney the Sydney.

Of course, the first one out in Sydney.

Olympics, which was branded by its Samaranch as the Best Olympics ever. So we were all watching from afar, gone.

Bests best.

Yeah, they they look, they're bringing Burke here, you know, it's it's hardly there's no Nikki Webster flying around the stadium there don't know that that's the best Olympics ever, you know. No. Cathy Freeman lighting that cauldron, you know, can't be as good as what the Sydney Olympics was. No way. No way.

Nah, Nah. Yeah. Sorry, that's not Nikki Webster. No way.

No dancing Kangaroos. Yeah, definitely not. And.

Although they did say that Bjorks is one of the most innovative and visually striking performances in Olympic history. Yeah, well, I think it's it's got to do with Bjork and her unique voice as well. I mean, her talent is amazing. It was. It was a big Olympics, though. Athens. It was coming home, basically the modern Olympics coming home to the birthplace of.

We'll give it.

We'll give it visually striking. You still look best.

Olympics.

There was a record participation as well, 201 National Olympic Committees participated, which made it the first time that the number of teams exceeded 200 at that. At that point in time.

OK.

Is that right? Well, I guess the world was all kind of post September 11 as well. This is the First Olympics post September 11 as well. So you know security, big deal there was there was that potential for terrorist attacks the, the, the political climate was pretty raw at the moment. Lots of security concerns. I think the Greeks spent somewhere in the vicinity of 1.5. Billion dollars just on. Treaty to make it one of the most expensive security operations in Olympic history.

They did. There was over 70,000 security personnel, including police, military and private contractors. There were special counter terrorism units and rapid response teams, obviously. Yeah, being the first Olympics since. September 11 are NATO provided air and sea surveillance as well as logistical support. They collaborated with various intelligence agencies, including agencies from the US, The UK, Israel, just to gather and share intelligence on potential. Threats advanced surveillance including CCTV cameras and drones. Biometric cards were used for the athletes and officials and staff as well to control the access and secure the different areas they were checking for explosives, chemical agents and a lot of security checkpoints.

MHM.

For people that were coming in to watch for the spectators as.

Well, I I just want to go back to the comparison between Sydney and and and Greece for a second. You know, the just the torch lighting like we had Kathy Freeman, you know Indigenous icon.

Hmm.

Ohh yes, we had Kathy, yes.

Runner. Like, really. And they had Nikos Kakola Manicus, who was a windsurfer.

Hmm.

A great windsurfer.

A gold medal windsurfer.

You don't see a Greek windsurfer. Well, I I don't know, but I I don't associate the Greeks with windsurfing. No, no, they're pretty good, apparently.

With windsurfing? Well, well, they do. And they win gold medals at windsurfing. I did not even know. That wind surfing was an Olympic event. No, because that's one of those past times. It's like surfing. It's wind surfing anyway.

When? Was in there. No, I didn't know that either. I had to do windsurfing at my year 7 camp at churros heads, and it was horrible. It was the most horrible experience and they ended out going, going out into the middle of the lake. And I didn't know how to get back in so.

Yeah. It.

I just jumped off it and swam back.

So I'm back in you abandoned ship. Wow.

And left it there. Yes, it was horrible. Horrible, horrible sport. Hate it.

You'll never be a. You'll never make Captain if you abandon ship like that. You know, you know, there was also. I know. But anyway, there's this capacity. I I'm not putting you to many Greek windsurfers, OK, so don't start writing letters.

Ho sport Nicholas.

Alright, but there were there was concerns too about the venues being finished on time and again. Well, yeah and.

Doesn't that happen every Olympics? Don't we always see in the lead up? Oh, I don't think they're gonna finish it in time. Oh, look, they're still building the stadium. They're not gonna have the beds ready for the athletes. Ohh, my gosh. They haven't furnished the village. Ohh, no.

But but I think you know. Well, yes. Ohh. They won't have the beds. They won't have the beds. Ohh, they're gonna run out of condoms in the Olympic Village this year, you know. And I I.

Every time.

I think too Australia was very interested in that cause. We were like we're just we're we're just waiting for you to fail, mate. We just held the best Olympics ever like four years ago. Sydney 2000. You know, the that's not even cold.

Yeah.

We didn't have. We didn't have cardboard beds.

Exactly have.

Yeah, that's right. Did they? Was that Athens the cardboard beds?

Well, no, they've got them this year and I think they've I think they've done it a few Times Now because they they wanna recycle them afterwards. It's like all about sustainability, but also so you can't have a little get it sexy time because it would collapse, wouldn't it?

Cardboard beds. Ah. Yes. Well mate, after I'll tell you what after the sexy time once they all finish there they'll all be pulped anyway. I'll, it's. Thing foul. Anyway, they had lots of budget overruns in Athens, but they spent up big. They spared no expense. I think that the total costs were around $9 billion, which was way beyond.

Oh, don't we? All that's what happens when we have the.

Olympics.

I think that's euro dollars too. Euro dollars is like 20 million times our dollar.

Way beyond what they estimated. So then then you think about, you know how how Dan Andrews reneged on what was that the Commonwealth Games? He reneged on the Commonwealth Games.

Ohh, was that yeah, something like that. Probably a smart move.

You know which was somewhere around the $2 billion mark. You know when you're looking at the Athens Olympics way back in the early 2000s, exceeding 9 billion and.

Yeah. Hmm.

Maybe it was the right call. It's very expensive. But you know what price to put on sport and the enjoyment and the unification that it brings. I mean, come on, this is sport. It distracts us from everything that is going on. Like right now, after everything that's been going on in the world with the attempted assassination.

Potentially.

The world together, isn't it?

Donald Trump, and we're all scared about what's gonna happen in the United States of America. How welcome is the Paris Olympics right now.

Yeah, it is a nice distraction. Does bring us all together, Celine. Ohh, my gosh.

So excited and happy for it. So happy for it. Yes.

A moment. Wait a moment.

Yes. Anyway, the first week of the Olympics, the first week of the Olympics that we're in here, big week for Australia because obviously the first week of the Olympics, all there is in Australia, all we get to watch really is swimming and and and and now I guess now compared to them, you know, free to air TV channels.

Hmm, what happened? We had a big weight, didn't we? But that's all we care about in history.

Hmm.

Have the rights to it now they're streaming, so you've got multiple channels, so you can go and pick and choose kind of what sport you wanna watch. But back in 2004, it was swimming all week. That's all you got to watch. And the highlights, the men's 400 metre freestyle. Ian Thorpe on the.

Something that kids. Yeah, yeah.

Gold medal in the men's 400 metre freestyle and here.

It is thought just in front. Heck, it's closing, can fought win again, hasn't lost for six years. Heck, it's very close, really close. Closing thought by the Hackett. It's gonna be a touch. They hit it. Thoughts. Got it. What a race. Hackett 2nd and. 3rd killer. 1/2 for Australia and four wins his fourth gold medal at the Olympic Games and joins Murray Rose, Buddy Capitan Dawn Fraser as the only Australians in all sports in 108 years.

To do it, Ian, tell us about the emotion of this race. We all know what's gone on the last four or five months. You you seem exhausted. You seemed exuberant, but you saw you were also emotional at the end of.

That I was emotional because, you know, I didn't realise how much this event meant to me. And you know, a lot of people have sacrificed a lot. To give me. This opportunity and you know, not just Craig Stevens and giving me this chance to send this race and defend my Olympic title being on my coach, my parents and family and friends and you know, I really do. Appreciate all that.

The gold medal and Olympic champion, the time of three minutes 43.10 seconds representing Australia.

I was a. One for the torpedo. It was a massive one for the torpedo because he'd obviously won the 400 at Sydney in 2004. Years on, has he still got it? Can he still do it? He's getting a bit long in the tooth. Do we think Thorpe can make it?

Hmm.

We were doubting him, weren't we? In the lead up.

Yeah. Well, and he had grant Hackett hot on his heels as well, I mean.

Sir, Athens.

Was like ohh he's. We've got a lot of pressure on him, don't know. If he can do it, but he did.

Swimming in Australia at this stage was peak like we had the torpedo we had Hackett. We had Michael Flynn. We had all of those guys, you know, and the girls were doing just as well.

Hmm. Hmm.

As well, if you know what I mean, but.

Hmm, well, it was. It was also, not only did he win, it was also a bit of a moment for him because he was the first swimmer to win at consecutive Olympic because he did, like I said, he won at Sydney, but he was the first one to do it consecutively and we were doubting him but.

Yes, because he wanted. Yeah. Yes. No. Thought he did it. And this is what I love about living where we do as well because you can go to the. Train Institute of Sporting Camera you can swim in the pool that those guys train in and that's always interesting because the first time I swam in there, I didn't have a cap.

Yes.

On and they made me work. Cap. Yeah.

You gotta try. No, that's right. I love. The rules there you have to wear a cat.

Yes, because I didn't want my hair. Getting in the water.

And did you notice that they've got at the end of the pool? They've got? It's clear. It's like a clear window, so that they.

Yes. The coaches can watch.

So they can watch. You do a tumble turn and I was like.

Yes, yes I did.

Oh my God. Hope nobody's watching me because they'll probably they'll probably send out the lifeguard, pull her out. She's drowning.

I did a tumble term there and then I got. Ended up in the next lane and got tangled up in the ropes. It was terrible. Yes, yes.

She's drowning. Give her some help.

It turns it problematic if you haven't practised them.

Yes.

They are the most uncoordinated thing in.

Ohh no, it's like if you go too early.

The world.

Just nuts, because you've gotta, you've gotta kind of you turn, but then you've gotta flip your body around it. Just.

Yes, if you go too early, your feet don't even touch the wall. You look like a goose. Terrible. And if you go too late, you crack your head. Yes, but I I like that. You can go there. And it's it's in a bit of a state of disrepair.

Doesn't make sense. Yeah, I know. Big mistake, stupid. I'm gonna say it's probably not at its peak at the moment.

I think the pool is still really well maintained, but there's there's, there's a couple of trophy cabinets off to the side there and you can see. The blocks from Sydney 2000 that thought be they've got the actual blocks with and you can put your hands and they've got a copy of the not a copy actually the the His suit, his suit that he wore in the water and stuff and just a few other bits and bobs you know.

Yeah. Yes. Ohh that's right yes.

It's a bit fun out there cause you can also go to the track and field and you can go and do high jump and long jump and.

Yes.

Yes, that's great. Yes, Indy yourself in.

It's fun. Good fun, good fun, and and then I remember I hate sport. What am I doing here? I'm just going to go home.

The process and realise that you know. Yes, probably not a good touch. Well. Something that made me hate sport a little bit as well was the and look, this was gold for Australia too. This was the this is the women's 4 by 100 metre freestyle relay team that won gold in Athens. I'll play the race first.

Ohh this is. Is. A bit close to home. One, isn't it?

USA lead by three one hundredths of a second, Thompson and Henry 31 year old against 21 year old Jodie Henry of Australia shading Jenny Thompson has taken the lead here. The Australians have only won this race once. Who was with Dawn Fraser in 1956. Henry's moving away. She's going to win it for Australia. This has been a remarkable last leg. Jodie Henry is gonna bring Australia home for what will be best victory United States second. And the Australians have broken the world record 100 metres soon by Jodie Henry is the stuff of legends.

Yes.

It is the high point of a remarkable opening night of swimming. It was thrilling to watch, and Patria Thomas has got a gold medal at the Olympic Games at long last. It's as good as it gets.

As good.

Sarah Ryan also gets a gold medal in swimming the.

Heat today she does. And Jodie. Jodie Henry spent a 53.2 on the back end of that. That's a phenomenal swim.

So it was a phenomenal swim. It was one of those ones that we hadn't won for quite some time and everyone it was history basically was history that broke the record.

Broke the records that was set by Germany in two. 1002.

Patricia Thomas got a gold medal at the Olympics, which is what everyone wanted, cause Patria was kind of one of those darling swimmers. That was a bit of a bridesmaid, I guess. When it came to some of those. So the four by 100 was a massive event. Now the reason I went dark on this, this really kind of.

Umm.

It just it just soured it, muddied the waters and it made me think a lot about the way Australian swimming is and the culture in Australian swimming. Umm, maybe I was on to something at the time because you know, there's stuff that has come to light over the years about the culture within the Australian swim team. And I don't want to get too much into that, but I will tell you about this experience. It's and and my experience with it. So Sarah Ryan won a gold medal too. You heard Bruce Mcavaney say that in the coverage there. Great coverage by Bruce Mcavaney as always as well. But Sarah Ryan won a gold medal too. So Sarah Ryan was a colleague of of mine and yours Mel as well. She worked at the radio station. She did the breakfast show with me for about a year. Before you came on board in 2004.

And the reason that I came on board was that she resigned in order to train and participate in the Olympics.

So she realised that and this was she'd been to the Olympics previously, I believe. And this was kind of her last crack. She was getting a bit long in the tooth as well. So when I was working on air with her, she would come in and do the radio show and stick around until about 9:30, ten in the morning and go to the meetings and stuff. And then she'd Nick off to training and train.

Yeah. Yes.

For the rest of the day at the AIS, she was training, training, training, training, eat, sleep, breathe, swimming, that's all she did.

Hmm.

And she was. She smelled like she smelled like chlorine the entire time she went through the whole, you know, you know.

Did smell like chlorines? No offence. She had a chlorine sense. Yes, love. Absolutely lovely person. Really lovely.

It was just. A really, really lovely person. My life compared to hers. Completely different partying, having a great time doing all those things, burning the candle at both ends. And this person is just eating, sleeping and breathing. Swimming and like diet. All of that stuff. So she had to work so hard to do that.

Person.

Yeah. Yes, yes, I can imagine.

Yeah. Yeah.

And I saw that first hand. I saw that first hand and then when she realised she. Has a chance at going to Athens. She threw in the towel on the radio and she went hell for leather with the swimming.

But we were following it so closely because of that connection, and it was just so wonderful to see her go through that and work so hard and to then be chosen for the team. Yes. And to go over there, to participate in that event.

Yes, yes, exactly. Yes. Yes. That's exactly right. And so I'm watching the heats. Yep. And I'm watching Sarah in the water, and I'm emotional. I've got tears in my I'm like, go. This is everything you've worked for. She's she's got them through to the final. She's in the team in the heat, and we get to the.

Yeah. Yeah.

Final and Sarah Ryan is out of the team and Patria Thomas is in the team and they're like we're a chance for a gold medal, we're gonna put patria in the team so that we can guarantee the gold medal. And we're Sarah, thanks very much for your service, but you're done. We're gonna bench you for the final now.

Where is she? Where is she? What has happened?

I'm fairly certain. And I and I don't want to speak too much on her behalf, in spite of the fact that she has that gold medal, I think she was quite devastated at being cut from the team.

Hmm.

I was devastated. For. I would know that they could do that. I I I had no idea that that could happen. I thought if you were going over there to participate in that event and you slam the heat, I thought you automatically slam the final. I didn't know that they could sub.

Wasn't devastated.

People in and out well. Was even a thing.

Yeah, well, they can. And they did. Yeah. I just remember being so. And that was the only event she was over there for was the relay.

Yeah, yeah.

So she was kinda use. I think by by the swimming team she probably has a completely different version of the story, but for me, who had been working with this person and seeing what they were putting in, I was just so outraged.

Yeah. The dedications, yeah, same.

And angry and devastated for her. And that really took the shine off. All of this stuff because you're watching the TV and the propaganda and it's all these great storylines about, you know, rising to the occasion and their heroes and all of that sort of stuff. But at the end of the day, when it's like. Heck, we think we're a better chance of a gold medal in spite of picking you and in spite of getting you getting us to the final and stuff, we're gonna and like there's nothing against Patria Thomas, who was also a great athlete and by all accounts probably a wonderful person. I think we chatted to her in the media from time to time, but I don't remember too much of the conversations we've had because she was a very.

Hmm.

Big local identity here. When they're all at the AIS training and stuff as. Well, but I just thought. That was. Alright, it's music time. I mean, we've gone from Burke at the opening ceremony to God knows what's happening in music this week.

Ohh, we're going to go to bustard over in the UK. Thunderbirds is still #1.

Crap.

Pentagon.

That.

I prefer the guy that left and did the the metal band, not the metal band, the. More heavy rock.

Yeah, post ********. It's post ********. Yeah, it's like like, I'm like when I go to work and I just kind of don't really. I'm post.

Band.

Didn't mind that post. Sorry, my mistake.

Corporate yeah.

Post corporate you what does that mean? That that's like you're you're. After corporate post corporate.

I'm half like, yeah, I'm just, like, rocking half like it's post COVID. So I'm post corporate, so I'm halfway between casual, like weekend attire and weekday attire and kind of a nice happy medium in between. Comfortable. Yeah. So busted number one in the UK. Thunderbirds are go.

Thanks for that.

It's cool. Nice. OK, that's a. Good.

Look.

Like that for you.

New #1 here in Australia we had scar by Missy Higgins.

Ohh great song.

And doesn't that sound familiar? Doesn't that hit the cluster? Doesn't that make you see that? Thanks. And everyone wants a little more so that I remember never go that far. Could you leave me with the sky?

Sky, I love it. I love Missy Higgins. I love an Australian singer who's not afraid to sing with their accent. She sings with an Australian fresh. Yeah, it's beautiful. She sounds wonderful. Don't anyone let anyone tell you that the Australian accent isn't sexy. Would you leave me with this?

Doesn't that just take you right back to early 2000s? With an Australian accent.

Yeah.

An accident, isn't it?

Yeah.

We do love to elongate, don't we? That just transports me right back though to that cause. That song was everywhere in 2004. It was all over the radio. You'd go shopping and all the clothing stores would be playing it. As you're walking through the West fields.

Yes, yes you do. Now. It was very popular song, yes.

Hmm.

I think it's a mainstay on Woolworths radio these days, if I'm being honest, yes.

It is. I've heard it. I've heard it in the deli aisle.

Hmm. Yeah, should be like chopping for a life of break.

Yes, many times.

Familia doesn't.

It does sound familiar.

That hits are close to home.

Yeah.

And then obviously the Arias, she just she just cleaned up at the Arias with that song, the album.

She did that. You, didn't she? What was the album?

Called the album was the sound of white, so that was off her debut album Scar. It was, and it was the first single that she released off the sound of.

Ohh.

Hmm.

Yes, that sounds like an album a Trump supporter would buy.

White. It was written by Missy Higgins, but also Kevin Gryphon of the American band better than.

Ohh good, I thought you were talking about Peter. Gryphon wasn't really not Peter Gryphon, his brother Kevin.

Ezra. The single her most successful single, it entered the charts at #1 it went platinum.

Wait a SEC. Wait a SEC. Better Than Ezra. What? What song did they have? Ah. Come on, you know it.

Ohh.

I feel like it's a name. It's like someone's name. Maybe or something.

Was it? I think it was like they had. Two singles like. Good and desperately wanting it anyway. We're not talking about. That's like they're they're better off writing songs for Missy Higgins.

Ohh OK.

Yes, well, that was a very successful song. It went. It went platinum at one lots of awards. And and and rewinding to to 2004 around that time she was touring with the way. George, remember George loved that as a brother and sister, wasn't it? Yeah. Love George. Pete Murray loved. I went to. I took my dad to.

I. Yes.

Yeah, they were great.

Murray.

A Pete Murray concert.

Yes.

The the Holy Grail, remember when the Holy Grail was in civic under the car park?

I do. It was wonderful. Good venue there.

That whole great, that was a great venue. It really was. Except I left my handbag there once. Ohh and I could.

Yeah. Oh.

Get in my house. But I went back the next day and they had it behind. The bar for me. Well, that's very good. So that was helpful. They were helpful, yes. And my money and my cards were.

Well, that's very good. There were still honest people in the early 2000s.

Still in there, but I had already cancelled.

Isn't that wonderful?

My. Cards cause I was worried, but the cards were still in there and everything great and you?

Isn't that wonderful? Doesn't that sound familiar?

Yeah.

Yes. And the John Butler Trio also loved them. That's a good mix. That's a good tour. She still making music February this year, she released the single. You should run. And I think that is the lead single from her 6th studio album which is due.

Great band, great band the John Butler Trio. Yeah, yeah.

Is she?

About.

I think in a couple of months time September this year. Ohh yeah, love.

Good on you, Missy Higgins. Her didn't think you'd go that far? But you have which is good. Top five. Yeah. Billboard top five. Let's do. That.

Hi.

My body.

It's weird.

All I can say.

She.

Don't pants. He just pull up my pants and do the rock away. Lean back, lean back, Lean back, working that back out. Know how to act so slow? Slow, slow.

That's a different top flight. There's at least two new songs in that top five. Hmm. See, I'm paying attention.

Two new entries, yes. Thank you. Appreciate that.

You.

Welcome.

I was thinking you know how we were talking earlier about polyphonic ringtones and having to make your own ringtones as well.

Yeah, yeah.

I am going to make a ringtone for my phone. I've had Motley crew kicked up my heart for probably about 1213 years. Mind you, my phones been on silent for 10 so you know I've only played.

Quite some time, yes. Yeah, no kidding. You never answer when I ring.

For probably two years.

You.

I am going to turn lean back into my new ringtone, but the start of lean back.

Really.

The chorus has.

The N word. Yeah, you can't. You can't have the N word in your ringtone, no?

You know? Yeah, you can't. You can't have that as you. No, no.

But the start of it was like.

Yeah.

Wow, I'm going to make that my ringtone.

Ohh OK. I reckon you should just record yourself doing that and then have your voice doing it. Yeah, that should be your ringtone. Don't use the song, just do it yourself. Yeah, yeah. Might get around that.

Through mate, do you think that would work? Well, I'm sure the office would love to.

Hear that? The middle of the.

There's a cover you might get around the copyright bot.

Day.

They're in in the middle of a teams meeting that coming on that is fantastic.

Excellent, excellent. Look good for. Two was it #2? Sure is massive #2 that song.

That was number 2.

Lean back.

Back slow motion still in at #1. Usher Confessions, Part 2 #3 and our new entries are turn me on. Kevin. Little in at #4 and sunshine. By a little flip featuring Leah in at #5.

Right. Little flip sunshine. What?

Second single from little flips. Third album. You gotta feel me. I don't actually remember this song, and I don't remember a little flip and it just makes me think of when I was too scared to do a full flip on the trampoline.

Let's see. Just a little flip.

And I'd go down on my knees 1st and then flip rather than flipping from the standing position, that's.

A little bit. Well, maybe. How she got in the chat?

So I feel about a little flip.

It was actually remade. It might sound familiar to you because it was remade in 2022 by rapper Tiger.

You ain't. Where about girls? Cause you know.

This all just right.

They're the fattened up. Bit more bass.

Bit more bit more bass that feels like the subwoofer is cranked up in the old pulsar. There the vibrations through the through the seats.

Yes. Yeah, I feel like you could, you know. Yes, which is always good when you've taken the ladies for the drive with all those vibrations. So yes. Well, you probably wanna have some leather seats, then easier clean up.

Have a movement. That makes me need to go to the.

Toilet to be honest.

That was tiger. Do you know who tiger is?

Tiger, Tyga. Tiger.

Yes. Do you know that tiger? That tiger went steady with Blac Chyna, who's now married to well, well, no, no. Had a child with Rob Kardashian.

All right. Ah. So it's like Tiger, Tiger with Hawaii and China with Y and the whole time I'm sitting there and looking at how successful those people are. And I'm asking why.

China with a why? So I think. Blac Chyna was in Tigers video clip and then they were together and then she went steady with the the Kardashian, the Kardashian fella. And I think they've broken up, but they have a kid and I think their kids name is dream. But then Tiger went steady with Kylie Jenner, who is like sister of Rob Kardashian or half sister.

And then Tiger was in Blac Chyna.

Yeah, she in.

And Kylie also has a why in her name?

Wow, I think you've just uncovered something here.

I mean, I know I think I've just unlocked the Da Vinci Code of stupid.

You've unravelled the Kardashians, alright.

I have anything else you need done this evening? This afternoon? This morning, today.

Could you play Kevin Little also new in the charts this week?

Kevin Little, also with a Y in his name.

You got me going crazy.

Going crazy.

I remember this song they used to play it at at Quattro. Do you remember Quattro? Yeah, that was a good club in the interchange is a very clock.

Turn me on by Kevin Little. Hated it. I remember quattro. That's a very quattro song. That one very quattro song. Yeah.

Trace, huh? Yes.

So there's a lot of grinding that happened that.

At Quattro I think I just used to drop in for a quick Jager bomb and then Lee.

Sorry, always a lot of good.

I'd have one jagerbomb to leave. I'd be like this place.

Too much grinding for my liking.

They play, they play too many songs with people, with wise in their surname. Yeah, yeah.

With wise hate, that debut single of Vincentian, he's Vincentian. He's from Saint Vincent and Grenadines. I saw them in the opening ceremony. They cause I remember the flag. They were. I think they had about four competitors.

Vincent and Grenadines, yeah.

And they weren't on a small boat. They were on a a larger boat, but with about five other smaller countries. You know the boat. Yeah. So there was like, 1 country at the front of the boat. And then I think they were, they were in the middle on the roof. And then there was another one in the middle on the roof. And then there's one on the back of the boat. So they there they were.

Cancelled. Just bunched them all in together. Yes, the one in mid ship. Yes. At. Valve, yes.

They had a very small contingent.

But good luck to them. Good luck.

Yes, indeed, well, you know.

That's where Kevin Little came from.

If they ever host the Olympics, maybe Kevin Little can perform. You know, you can have a big dress that unfolds to all the countries of.

Absolutely.

The world, yes. Yes.

And he can turn us on. Turn us on. That was the lead single from his self titled debut album. It also features spragga bends, spragga bends, fragger bends, fragger bends. I think that was in the radio edit Spragens worldwide hits, but as I was listening to it does sound a little bit familiar.

Who? Bragg evens. That's an interesting name, isn't it? Spragga Benz. I'll bet he does.

Hmm.

So hang on, this is Kevin little. OK, that's enough of him. What's it sound like?

Play it this one.

I love you.

Baby.

What do you think? Does it sound?

Yeah.

Similar I think.

I think I.

It sounds similar a little bit slower.

Think if you if you speed up LA Bonita by Madonna, I think that Kevin Little has appropriated the the the rhythm, the backing rhythm.

Yes. So you have to speed. It up a little bit. He's played it at 1.2 speed, I reckon.

Yeah, well, even the vocal line sounds similar sounds similar.

1.2.

Hmm. Yes.

I prefer. Last night I dreamt of San Pedro. So imagine Missy Higgins. Singer's last ready. Yes. Last night I dreamt of San Pedro.

Suspicious.

Let's move on to music news. This is one of the the greatest and most disgusting stories in music history, I think.

Ah, this is going to.

I think this is gonna go. Down as my favourite music news. Items so far on C -, 20.

It's a bit of a it's. A bit of an urban legend and it it, it is constantly. Brought back up.

I.

Think it's revisited, particularly in Chicago every year, every year?

Yeah. Like there's there's some significant there's there are some significant events in music like the Woodstock bad acid incident, Altamont, where the the Hell's Angels were the security guards for The Rolling Stones and ended up.

Yes.

Yes.

People ended up dying as a result. There's some. There's some big stories like some legends, some urban legends in music and this one, I think, takes the cake.

Oh.

It's going to be a big time in Chicago for this one because it's the 20 year anniversary and like I said, they celebrate it every year. So 20 years.

Yes.

It is. They do. That's what I think is funny.

I'm really interested. To see how they're going to mark this this anniversary on the 8th of August 2004, the Dave Matthews Band Tour bus dumps some dumps into a river. Yes.

Is they celebrate? So so to explain that Dave Matthews Band huge band in the early 2000s in the USA in particular, but also around the world, Dave Matthews Band, they do a two night show at the Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, WI on route to Chicago. So they booked. Five buses for this show this tour. Hmm. And Stefan Wall is the name of one of the bus drivers. And on the 8th of August, he's driving across a bridge.

He's driving across a bridge and he's got a purpose. He's a man on a mission. He's he's going somewhere.

In Chicago. A man on a mission.

And he's got a job to do.

So he he's he's got some jobs to do or get rid of. And so he's driving across a bridge in Chicago and he decides to empty the buses, black water, which is the septic tank at the bus. Think Christmas vacation. Think Randy, think it was full.

Yes.

He's decided to empty the into Chicago's river. OK, now most of the bridges in Chicago have this riveted grating on them, which is used to keep it nice and strong. And it's got like anti slip properties, right? That riveted grading. And it allows for all the rain and the snow and other liquids to pass through.

Hmm.

Yeah, it's got holes in it, yes.

Which means that they don't need to put all this drainage across the bridge. It's just like it's graded so that that they don't need to do that and they don't need to salt the bridge or the deck during the winter months during the snow either, which because it all passes through, which means it doesn't ice over, right.

Smart.

So he's going across the bridge and he thinks ohh man, I've gotta empty the septic like it's freaking full as I'll just do it. I know that there's river degrading on this bridge and the river's underneath. Perfect. I'm just gonna drive across and I'm gonna hit the dump button and and dump everything.

Riveted, grating holes.

Beneath. What could go wrong?

Yeah. And so he did that. So. So what he did was, is he, he he dumped all that from the tour bus. Into the river and I have to say that for starters there is a rule when you're on tour. Hmm. If you've got a bus with a toilet.

Oh.

In it no number twos you. Don't.

No number twos. That's what we did at summer camp. There was no number twos.

You don't, you don't.

Allowed in the Hut, you know. You'd have.

To go to the the specific designated.

Wait till you get to the venue and and then do it there.

#2 toilets. There's #2 toilet. So, riveted, grating, lots of holes, river below. What could possibly go wrong? So.

Oh.

He, he, he. 'S I don't even know what it is, is it? A hose. I don't know what.

It's a perfect plan, really.

It's it, he he he goes to. Tip it through. And it it tips through the riveted grating to a certain.

Degree. I prefer the term dump to tip. I think it's more.

OK, he dumps it through the riveted grating, but.

Of a dump.

Hmm.

There, instead of landing in the river and we're talking 360 kilos or 800 lbs of dump.

And again, 360 kilos of human waste from A2 of.

That's a lot of toos that's a lot of.

Us. Twos. That's like the entire Rd crew. Like in like.

What are you eat? Thing.

Right. Like, what's the catering on this tour?

Hmm.

That's a solid log. Good. Yes. Lots of cheese. 360 kilos, 800 lbs.

It's me. You almost have to waffle. Stomp it.

Through through the grating, but instead of landing in the the water passenger boat, Chicago's Little lady was passing under.

That remove. Degrading, yes.

The bridge at. That exact moment.

I and and and. Happened.

Chicago's Little lady was hosting the Architecture Foundation tour of the Chicago River with its open roof terrace, open roof terrace, 120 passengers standing on the open roof terrace soaked. With 360 kilos of.

You mentioned like they're cocktails canapes.

I'm having my I'm having me prawn cocktail. I'm having a glass of shardy. I'm having a good time. I'm dressed up in my good formal outfit from.

Yes.

There's a nice. There's waiters and waitresses in white shirts, you know, handing out horses. Doors. Yeah.

Yep. Yep, got my good formal dress on. Yep. Probably whites. Yep. Having a prawn cocktail and a sudden downpour. Brown downpour, brown rain.

Yeah.

There's like it, absolutely it rained, it rained human waste. All over these people, this brownish yellow slurry that soiled their clothes made lots of them very, very ill people got very sick and and the quote was a passenger said that there was stunned silence initially cause like what are you going to say?

Oh.

And then and then this horrible realisation. They're like, because you can imagine like it would happen, you'd be like, what just happened? What is that? Ohh, my God. That's what that is. Yeah. Terrible.

What is that?

Hang on.

It's not, it is.

It was a summer day in August. I was biking downtown to my job in the loop. And I happened to stop on the bridge. It was behind a tour bus. I thought maybe it was Prince. I'm from Minneapolis, so most times I think it's Prince.

And everyone is covered in this brown stuff.

Gross. Just really this is pretty gross.

Pooped on them that that could have been me and my family. That could have been me.

What kind of band takes poops? On their tour bus.

See what?

And a band poops on their tour bus. The Dave Matthews Band, ladies and gentlemen.

That did that, did. Happen to me once. I did get in trouble because I went out for dinner with my friends. No, no, no. But I got in trouble. I went out for dinner with my friends and we went to a really nice Italian restaurant and we.
